I’m sure there are 3.5 people out there who will put Sony’s portable Blu-ray player to great use. It has a 9-inch screen, 4.5 hours of battery life and 1080p output via HDMI. But for the rest of us, The Sony SX910 is an extremely niche-y, borderline unnecessary piece of tech.
We would be better served with a tablet and a Netflix account, because Blu-ray’s 1080p resolution is basically wasted on a screen so small. But I sort of get it. Hypothetically there is a Blu-ray enthusiast out there who also spends a lot of time on the road, and really doesn’t want to waste their time obtaining digital or DVD copies of movies they already own.
Sony’s portable Blu-ray player will be available later this year. [Sony]

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 4:22 PMI’d say more people would use this than would rip their blurays to digital copies and convert them to a format their iPad or Android Tablet can play.
Plus bluray + digital copy + dvd packs piss me off, especially when there is no bluray only version available. It’s just a way to force people to buy three copies of the same movie they only wanted once.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 4:36 PMI wouldn’t call it hate. I tend to agree with Adrian. What’s the point of this? It’s bigger than even the kludgiest of tablets. There are a load of other ways to get your HD movie fix while on the road and buying a bulky device that does nothing else is a waste.

Anyone with kids will see a need/want for this, including me! How many copies of the Bee Movie do I want? :P
I think branding it as a Niche-y product is somewhat short-sited. You need to look beyond the techno-phile market.

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 4:50 PMWe wouldn’t be better served with a tablet and a Netflix account because Netflix isn’t available in Australia =D
But I get your point

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 6:14 PMBeing a parent, this is a god sent. as a parent you don’t really have time to convert Blu-ray to digital copy, you just want to stick the disc in and drive to your next destination.

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 10:04 AMWho said they care? If you own a Blu Ray of a movie, you think you should have to buy a DVD version AS WELL, just for the car? Geez.

you just summed up Sony for the past 10 years.

Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 12:48 PMI recently picked up a portable 10″ Bluray player and definitely don’t think it’s wasted.
While it doesn’t have a full HD screen (which would be a waste at this size), it has HDMI out. So not only do I have the convenience of being able to play both my DVDs and Blurays, I can also use it to play Blurays when on holidays (many hotels and holiday houses have flat screen TVs, but very few have Bluray players).
Plus it was only $99 (which I would have happily paid for a 10″ portable DVD player).
