Self-Healing iPhone Cases Could Save Your Clumsy Arse

If you’re a clumsy, phone-dropping fool, you either have a very scratched phone or a very scratched phone case. But this scratch-proof case from Nissan (yes, that Nissan) saves the klutzes of this world from their fumbling.

The new phone cases are based on technology developed by Nissan and the University of Tokyo back in 2005, report Ubergizmo. They use a coating made from polyrotaxane: when the surface acquires a small scratch, its chemical structure reacts and changes back to its original shape, effectively filling the gap the scratch made. In other words, it heals.

Now Nissan has used the material in an an iPhone case, which it launched over the weekend at an automotive show in Dubai. It’s in beta release (I’ve never heard of a phone case being in beta, either…), and is being tested by Nissan customers and journalists. For now, then, you’ll just have to keep trying to avoid losing your phone to the pavement. Good luck with that. [Ubergizmo]

It is, surprisingly. Most cases are for little more than decoration.

    Over It

I find it amazing that Apple develops poor quality products and relies of 3rd party companies to fix it yet Apple is still ‘God”.
Examples: Take the App BUMP, the iphone adverts on TV promote file transferring, yet the iphone alone cannot do this. It required BUMP.
In this case, the build quality is poor, and the consumer has to rely on a 3rd party case to fix Apple’s problem. Antenna gate anyone?
I am really over Apple, and will not be buying any of their products in the future. It is all marketing to the poorly educated …

Apple doesn’t make poor quality products, they just have a very clear focus on form over function. The iPhone 4 is a gorgeous phone, but whoever thought putting glass on the back too was grossly out-of-touch with reality. I’ve seen more shattered iPhone screens than I can count, when simply using a durable plastic would suffice.

Apple knows its audience and would rather make phones that have a superficially premium look and feel, than ‘cheap’ looking but actually durable designs. Doesn’t help that nearly all iPhones out there are wrapped in some case or other that detracts from its naked beauty.

      A tangential comment appears!

Why the hell do we add -gate to anything that creates an uproar within certain circles? How was it that this became such widespread shite? Brings to mind more grammatical redundancy, such as the current hashtag stuff.
