Optus Powering Free Australian Open WiFi

If you’re heading to Melbourne to watch athletic men and women hit a ball over a net in a real-life version of the game Pong later this month, you’ll be happy to know that Optus has announced it will be providing free Wi-Fi to the entire Australian Open tennis site this year.

The Wi-Fi service will be free and available to people of all telco persuasions, not just Optus customers. That said, Optus customers also get the benefit of being able to watch a live stream of the tournament’s coverage via a dedicated app on their smatphones.

Optus tells us it has dropped just over $3 million over the past 12 months boosting its network around the Melbourne Park area in order to handle the extra capacity, so hopefully it will be able to handle the influx of data users during the tennis tournament.
