Not only is Newt’s plan for lunar statehood completely insane — it’s also against the law! Not just any law, but space law, the most powerful of all laws, because it comes from the sky. Sorry, Newt.
BuzzFeed points out that Gingrich’s plan for an emphatically US moon colony and resultant 51st Moon State violates the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which was pitched by the USSR, UK and USA. Back then, the worry was putting nukes on the moon pointed at Moscow and/or Washington. Fast-forward several decades and it’s spoiling Candidate Gingrich’s low-gravity wet dream.
The treaty states, among other things, that:
The exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind;
Outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States;
Outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means;
Extending the US directly onto the moon runs contrary to just about all of that.
So, sorry, those of you who hoped to cross state lines across the vacuum. But think about it — what would the moon’s state flower be? Who could afford tuition at University of Moon, even at in-state rates? This thing just wasn’t going to pan out anyway. [BuzzFeed]

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 8:54 AMWell in this case there is reason to point out that Newty’s plan isn’t really all that legal. But really, who doesn’t love a good attack on a conservative?

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 10:09 AMThese aren’t conservatives, they’re manical wannabe dictators who’ve all lost their fricken marbles.
They’re so out of touch with really because they’re stuffing their noses with coke coated Benjamin Franklins, provided by the good old industrial military complex, drug companies & financial institutions!
The neo-republicans of America are so far right, that they are borderline insane corrupt retards.
Say no to crazy, vote no one. The private sector has rigged your democratic republic, America…

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 12:37 PMI love it how so many of those who attack the conservatives such as Newt, Santorum and the like go on massive tirades about how insane these people supposedly are. Throwing words like ‘dangerous’, ‘evil’ and ‘backward’ and yet never once actually making an effort to rationally explain why their policies are wrong. It’s almost like they don’t have a response, so they go on big emotional rants, someone will jump on board.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:05 AMThis is why Australian politics needs its own version of the Monster Raving Loony party. How else are we ever supposed to inject such delightfully silly policies into our elections?

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 1:03 PMWe already have one. It’s called Labor.

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 10:15 AMidk what rock you’ve been living in, but Labor = “Democrats of America” & Liberals (not liberal @ all) are = “Republicans of America”… The only thing that differs in our politics is:
A – Celebrity Status
B – Exuberant “Campaign Donations” (AKA dirty money or corruption in essense)

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 10:10 AMIt could happen, paid for by the overtaxed, underpaid working classes in the US.
Well it could happen, they pay for everything else the US does.
The greedy wealthy on Gingrichs’ side of politics don’t pay their share do they
Romney??

Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 10:04 PMLol. Gingrich isn’t proposing the US appropriate the moon or that they make claim to it being a US state. He’s proposing America sets up a base there. Hardly illegal. Author should think more and post less….

Monday, May 7, 2012 at 6:02 PMNo one said Newt’s plan was commercial. It’s only a base. To assume anyone is insane needs further examination. Try a living will Newt.
