According to Nokia’s financial results, released today, Microsoft paid the Finnish company a cool $US250 million in the final quarter of 2011 for adopting Windows Phone. That’s just the first payment: in total these “platform support payments” will likely add up to billions. No wonder Nokia’s keen. [Slash Gear]

I run Linux on my PC. Do you think Microsoft would throw a few bucks my way if I installed Windows?

That’s part of the deal: Nokia provides flagship-quality WP7 handsets and improves Bing Maps with their own tech; MS gives Nokia direct support. It’s a partnership that is already bearing fruit, but it remains to be seen if it can manage to reach the optimistic forecasts.
