Lunchtime Deals: Sony MUTEKI Home Theatre For $948

Gizmodo AU

It’s amazing how many people neglect the audio side of their home theatre system. If you fit into that category, you should probably rectify that now. If you’re after a simple yet manly system that will blow your neighbours away with enough components to build a small fort, the Sony MU.TE.KI system is the way to go. The Good Guys is selling it for $948, with their usual “less for cash” option too. Do it. [Lasoo]

Radio Rentals in SA and RT Edwards in QLD have it for $937 and usually offer a better price for cash too.

DONT DO IT. These things sound absolutely TERRIBLE for anything except movies. WASTE OF MONEY – your better off getting a set of Concept 6′s.

I disagree. They are great, especially at their price point. Maybe your setup isn’t calibrated correctly?

For a full fledged system at that price point, it is OK, sure. I don’t own them but have listened to multiple sets in stores (I know I know, they sound terrible in stores) and homes with a variety of room sizes etc, and even helped calibrate a few. They really are quite terrible IMO.

And as for the concept 6 comment – I have these at home and would much prefer to run just the Concept 6 towers then the whole crappy sony MuTeKi system.

Also, hardly a deal, You’ve been able to purchase these for under $1000 for atleast 6-12 months in most stores now. And thats without talking the sales people down.

Yeah, disgusting that people forgo these things :S I know people that have spent like over 2k on a tv and cabinet and stuff, then use the built in speakers…

And about the Good Guys comment, I find them pretty terrible with prices. The last few times we’ve bought stuff from them – TVs, Dishwasher, etc – we actually had to FIGHT just to get the ticketed price. Rather than a ‘pay less, pay cash’ scenario we had a ‘pay cash, or get slapped a ~10% boost on the price’ type deal. Was completely appalling.

Honestly, I think these systems are a waste of money.
    I have two JBL JRX100′s – $1200
1 Yahama P2250 Power Amplifier (170 Watts Per Side RMS) – Free for me or a few hundred second hand.
Bheringer Ultragraph Pro EQ – $299
And a small sound desk that was $199
Slightly more expensive yes. But it will crush that piece of sony filth into dust, and last 20 years longer, and still be 7 – 8 times louder (which is a bloody lot).
So if you wan’t my advice don ‘t buy yourself a stereo. Buy a P.A .system. Bigger, louder, stronger, tougher, cheaper, BETTER.
Plus….I can always start plugging mics into the sound desk and have a live band here! The JBL speakers being designed for commercial audio applications (pubs, bars, rock concerts etc) have all manner of built in protection so even idiots can’t blow the woofers. You can kicke the speakers over, spill drinks on them, kick the steel grills on the front if you like, they wont break. Why would you wan’t wimpy arse sony speakers with no built in protection, pathetic little lower power voice coils, and cloth covers on the front so the first five year old to come into your house can poke their fingers through the diaphram???? Why??? Any why surround sound???? I only have two ears!!!!!!!! Plus when you have this much power….the sound “surrounds” you no matter. Sometimes when I am watching a movie and someone gets shot….I think I have actually been shot….that’s how much I DONT NEED surround sound!!!! Rant over.
    Thankyou.

Don’t know much about the Sony speakers but thought I’d give my 2cents about the Good Guys – and that is they are very bad with customer service.
Will never shop with them again. I asked for a quote written on paper, the guy refused and pretty much asked me to piss off. I understand he didn’t want me to go elsewhere to match the price etc, but if he was so confident with his prices, then what does he got to lose? And in this case, a few grand because I was renovating my kitchen for new appliances.

Umm…these things are like.. years old.. and ive seen them cheaper then this price years ago.. They do sound good, very loud, but not crystal clear. If you dont wanna mess around looking for the best of the best and forking out more cash then you have, then just buy these. They are loud enough, plenty of speakers for surround sound goodness and two sub’s give great base. If i could get em for like $750, id definitely buy them again.

I bought this same set off grayonline for less than 650 delivered. They are in my gaming room hooked up to a projector, xbox and gaming pc. For this application it is a brilliant buy.
They are too ugly for a lounge room but suit the man cave perfectly.
Very happy with the performance for everything I throw at them in there.
I do have a very expensive set-up in the lounge to compare them too also and only think the expensive system necessary for music.
