That’s an awful lot of bread for something that’s not really necessary. I bought an OCZ Vertex2 120gb for around $200 a year or so ago, which is more than enough for most users. A couple of high quality HDD’s for storage and my PC rocks. All for under half that price!

Not really all that practical for laptop users, though, which now make up more than half of personal computers.

      Desktops are so last decade.

I’d suggest the opposite. I adandoned desktop/workstation form factors 5 or 6 years ago and haven’t looked back and for the past couple of years laptop sales have been higher than desktops. And before you start, I can assure you I use my laptop for things you would never dream of using any computer for. Now I have a brand new Ultrabook that runs Autodesk Combustion better than any other computer I have ever used, whilst simultaneously being a much better portable option than any tablet. For a start, there is zero overlap between the applications you use on a computer and on a tablet, so you have to have two sets of software to do the same things or you have to wait until you get home to do things your tablet simply can’t do. Meanwhile, if inspiration strikes me on a bus, I can start work on a new song right then and there and continue to work on it at home and everywhere else. I can get it finished, mastered and off to our label without ever having to move or copy files or translate things from one format to another. You just can’t beat that kind of convenience and simplicity. Why you would want to complicate your life with incompatible devices is totally beyond me.
