Bungee jumping is already the scariest thing in the world, so how does one make it EVEN SCARIER? By going the homemade, DIY route. These guys just tied a few knots, used a few carabiners and then just jumped off a freaking bridge. That’s it. Watch it, you’ll be stunned at how flimsy the entire set up looks.
This is so freaking extreme I almost cried. This is so extreme I’m going to turn on caps lock. THE GUY HIT THE WATER ON ONE OF HIS JUMPS FOR GOODNESS SAKES. JEEEEZZZUS PEOPLE DO YOU REALLY WANT TO TEMPT FATE LIKE THAT!? I’M HYPERVENTILATING JUST WRITING ABOUT THIS.

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 7:09 PMThe camera angles and depth of field make it look closer to the cliffs than it is… but the bit at the bottom where he touches the water isn’t so great. If his initial jump had been a bit wonky those rocks down there would’ve meant the end of his head.

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 7:30 PMHe was extending the elastic to it’s limit… the forces felt when stopping would be ridiculous. Not that that’s the most idiotic part of doing that… just another to add to the list. So freaking stupid.

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 9:40 PMIt’s called rope jumping, and if you want to see a person with NO fear at all, look up Dan Osman, plenty of vids of him and friends doing this on youtube etc…
He did however , have the misfortune of the rope eventually snapping on him, on film…

Friday, January 27, 2012 at 10:21 PMThat doesn’t look like he’s using a proper bungee cord. The ones they used in New Zealand (you know, where the sport was invented…) are way thicker and made of of hundreds of thin elastic cords bundled together. This rope looks like regular climbing rope with no where near the level of elasticity…
Having said all that, bungee jumping (as an ‘extreme sport’, that is) began with crazy Kiwis (like A. J. Hackett) bringing their home-made bungee ropes to bridges and jumping illegally, so I guess this is doing much the same.

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 3:55 AM@Tim just to clarify, Bungee jumping wasn’t “invented” in New Zealand… it was just commercialized there. A quick search will tell you:
Men on Pentecost Island in the South Pacific have been doing land jumping for hundreds of years.
“this ancient custom caught the interest of some students at Oxford University in England. In the late nineteen seventies, they formed a group called the Dangerous Sports Club. They liked to invent risky and sometimes crazy activities. They were some of the first people to test several of what are now called extreme sports. They are said to have invented modern bungee jumping.
In the spring of nineteen seventy-nine, members of the group jumped off the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. They were attached to the bridge by a bungee cord, a long elastic rope that stretches. They were dressed in black and white clothing and held bottles of Champagne wine. The press quickly reported on their wild activities. The group soon received even more attention when they organized a bungee jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California.
A man named A.J. Hackett of New Zealand later heard about this group. He decided to make the sport into a business. Mister Hackett worked with his friend Henry van Asch who was an expert at skiing. They started developing bungee ropes and materials. Scientists at Auckland University helped them. The two men knew that people would find bungee jumping exciting and fun. And they knew people would pay money for the experience.
