World’s Largest Model Railroad Adds World’s Largest Model Airport

With expansions planned all the way to 2020, the world’s largest model railroad just opened its latest addition: a 150sqm model airport, chock full of tiny aircraft support vehicles, hangers, terminals and passengers.

Originally scheduled to open in 2009, it has taken more than six years to complete the $US4.4 million+ expansion to Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland. The airport includes remote-controlled planes taking, landing and taxiing to terminals and hangers. Plus, there are luggage carts and other support vehicles scurrying about the tarmac. If you’ve ever dabbled in model railroads, I recommend taking the time to watch their entire promo video, and then weep over the vastly inferior setup in your rec room. [YouTube via Neatorama]

Wow… So much effort, they should be incredibly proud of this achievement, so much detail and such an amazing display!

I WAS going to make a smart alec comment about sad old men and model railroads…
But this … This is just incredible.
The attention to detail is simply astonishing.
Beats all those LEGO displays hands down.

The airport at Miniatur Wunderland opened way back in May, i visited in AprIl when they were still testing, though it was pretty much fully functional, other than the guy that had to carry the plane back to the Tarmac after it had “taken off”. It’s well worth a visit to Hamburg for.

Driving home from work yesterday I was thinking to myself that I hope I dont end up one of those guys who’s married and bored with life, and the only real hobby I have is my model train set in a room somewhere (like Reverend Lovejoy from the Simpsons cartoon). But this video was just amazing. I hope we have a place like this in Sydney somewhere. I’d love to see the real thing. It really blew my mind. Absolutely superb.
