Win One Of Five ‘Apes’ Blu-ray Combo Packs

Gizmodo AU

It’s giveaways week here on Gizmodo, and today we’re giving away five copies of the surprisingly awesome Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Each triple-play pack includes a Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy (in stores now for $38) – and we’ve sourced an Apes T-Shirt to throw-in as well.

And the winners are…David, Benjamin, Rhys, Scott and Mr Taco! Congrats guys!

This competition is now closed.

Turns out that Rise of the Planet of the Apes has 1000 digital effect shots — the most Weta has produced for a film since Avatar. Their motion capture tech can now also leave the studio, and this let Andy Serkis interact much more with the other actors.

Earlier this year, Gizmodo Australia sat down with Senior Visual Effects Supervisor, Joe Letteri, to ask how performance capture has progressed since Avatar and Lord of the Rings, and find out if Weta has contemplated video games.

To enter:

Simply watch the video and comment below what question you would ask Joe Letteri/Weta – about this or any other past/future project. Best five questions win the prize!

One enter per person please, Australian residents only. Entries close 10am AEST Monday December 19th.
Full terms and conditions here.

Did Cesar wear clothes so that there was less work for the CGI crew to render fur?

You say that WETA tends to stay away from video games, but do think that the advances in performance capture will allow for better film adaptations of games? And is there a particular video game character that you’d personally love to see Andy Serkis bring to the big screen?

The advances in replicating people and characters in 3D are truly amazing. Are there parallel advances in the audio side of a performance? I wonder about the ability to digitally reproduce dialogue in an actor’s accent, tone and style.

Where do you see the technology evolving to next. If you had to wait for technology to catch up for Avatar, are there other movies that are still waiting for the right technology before they can be filmed?

When you get inspirations for your movies, do you try them out on family and friends first to see if they are effective?

What do you want to see in the sequel? ie, what would you like to be added, any improvements, any major changes to the storyline, any storyline from the original, etc.

I’d like to ask Joe and Weta to discuss what the big breakthroughs in CG will be in the next 5-10 years, obviously they’ve cracked cloth, fur simulation, motion capture is advancing in leaps and bounds… what’s the holy grail for these guys?

If you could be any type of ape? Which would you be and why? And also, do you prefer working on real creatures\animals (so you have real life references) or would you rather make fictional creatures?

    Thanks.

I want to know, having worked so close with Andy Serkis, does he actually like being a CG Actor? Just because there will always be a tendency outside of our sort of community, to forget who is doing the star performance.

I could not believe, that the climb of Caesar’s rank through both primate and human hierarchies was so vivid and comprehensive. Was that the intention? For the simple movie goer to understand the climb in authority? Or was that ‘just how it ended up looking’?

What don’t you like about the movie or the technology used?
Artists are usually very critical of their own work so it would be a good change of pace to most interviews to talk about how he would have liked to improve it.

Should 3D fail as the next great saviour of the box office… Will cinematic block-busters go back to fleshing out good characters and telling a good story well?

As opposed to motion capture, facial capture to me sounds much more complex. How far has facial capture evolved since movies such as Lord of the Rings and King Kong, and what technologies are being developed to allow for better facial and muscle definition, or have we seen as much as we’re going to see?

There’s a big (justified) push for Serkis’ mocap performance to be recognised. However Caesar is the result of a multi-disciplinary team. What in your view would be the right ‘award’ to introduce to the Oscars? Best ‘performance’ perhaps?
