What Was The First Typeface On The Moon?

First, there was Neil. Then it was Buzz. And then there was Futura, which, unlike Neil and Buzz, stayed behind in Mare Tranquillitatis as part of a plaque commemorating humanity’s first landing on the moon:

Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon.
July 1969, A.D.
We came in peace for all mankind.

Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin E. Aldrin

Futura was created by German type designer Paul Renner between 1924 and 1926. Funny that the rocket that brought the astronauts to the moon was also designed by another German, the ex-Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun. [idsgn]

Seriously,… slow news day or something, we need to know what type face was used on the moon Lander in 1969?

not to mention that there was probably stuff on the probes that were sent there previously. In fact, quite a few camera probes were crashed into the moon (to save money on making ones that landed) to take close up images to look for landing spots, I am sure that they must have had some writing on them somewhere,.

Thank you Gizmodo. I wasn’t sleeping because I didn’t know the typeface used. Now I do, so I can sleep.

Oh c’mon people, stop whinging!! It’s an interesting piece of trivia! You took more time out of your day typing your response than it would have taken you to read the headline and decide to skip it. Get a life.

God, I can’t believe how much bitching is in these comments.

What, did Giz wake you from your nap and force you to read the article?
