Emeraq is a Twitter bot, and doesn’t try to pretend otherwise. The creation of Boston entrepreneur Michael Kowalchik, its sole purpose is to respond to movies quotes from four films: Better Off Dead, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ghostbusters and, of course, The Princess Bride.
Spammy? Yes. Unloved? Not at all. With over 27,000 tweets to its name and 760 followers, the “Electro-Magnetic Memory and Research Archive Quote-machine” by Massive Dynamics (an almost-reference to the TV show Fringe) has found a home on the social networking site. According to an interview with its creator on CNet / ZDNet, Emeraq can dish out one of four responses to some 50 lines from the aforementioned films.
It’s a labour of love for Kowalchik — there’s no money in the endeavour, apparently. While it’s not quite in the same territory as the command-line psychologist ELIZA, if you’re in a nostalgic mood, go ahead and give it your best Inigo Montoya.
