My Xbox Live iOS App Is Surprisingly Official

Gizmodo AU

Ever since Windows Phone 7 launched with Xbox Live integration, our hopes for an official Xbox Live app for iOS died a miserably lonely death. But it was all in vain, because Microsoft this morning snuck out an official iOS app for Xbox Live users.

It’s fairly extensive, offering similar functionality to the WP7 app. You can view the latest videos in the Spotlight section, manage your Avatar in the Social section, including the ability to send messages and add/remove friends, and view your Achievements and Gamerscore in the Games section.

It looks just as slick as the WP7 app, with similar Avatar animations while browsing through the app. It’s a nice effort, and well worth the free download.

Now all we need is an Android version…

    On Android, there is the Bungie app, which although is no Xbox Live app, does let you see which of your friends are online on Xbox Live. Better than nothing I guess.

    Microsoft keep making it easier to switch away from Windows Phone 7

      Being able to check your achievements on XBox live is hardly going to sway too many people to pick one OS over the other.

        I should have said for me to switch away.

        I don’t really care about getting achievements for playing games on my phone but the ability to send Xbox Live messages and see who was online was a feature that I used frequently, and something that I didn’t think I would be able to do with iOS. Now that I can, it is one less reason for me to stick with WP7

          There have been apps to allow just that on iOS for months… “360 Live” etc.

    That was a surprisingly confusing intro. Dying a lonely death was in vain? Isn’t it normally? What were you trying to achieve with the death of your hopes? And it was in vain because you then got what you hoped for? O_o

    Donno about you guys, but the app crashes whenever I try to view a games specific achievements. Maybe its just a problem with my account or something and apart from that the app looks great

    Why is the iPad version “landscape mode” only, when the iPhone version can handle “portrait mode”?

    The iPad version is ridiculously cool. Too bad I’ll never use it with my wp7 in my pocket.

    I hope this means that the rumored iPad Office suite will be fully metro.

    Has this managed to come out in Aus quicker than the new Xbox live companion app on WP7?

    What a joke Microsoft.

    This app runs so smooth. Especially the avatar editor, runs faster than my xbox -_-;
