Meet Stargate Stars This Weekend

Gizmodo AU

Fans of the various versions of the Stargate franchise in Sydney and Brisbane should probably make a note in their diaries that Michael Shanks, Lexa Doig and David Blue will all be in the country this weekend, answering questions about the various Stargate shows.

Shanks (Daniel Jackson from SG-1), Doig (Doctor Carolyn Lam from SG-1) and Blue (Eli Wallace from Universe) will be available for photos with fans and Q&A at the two events in Sydney and Brisbane. Tickets cost $120 a pop (or you can get premium packages with exclusive seats and photos included). The Sydney event will be happening on Saturday the 10th at the Sebel Parramatta, while Brisbanites will get their opportunity on Sunday the 11th at the Citigate Hotel in King George Square.

Pricey? Yes. But worth it for fans of the shows? Probably.

Amanda (along with Sanctuary co-stars Robin Dunne & Agam Darshi) was at Armageddon Melbourne & Auckland in October. Which cost $40 for two days, and had about 15 other TV/Comics/Animation guests. So yeah, I fail to see how events that charge huge amounts for a single day with only 2 or 3 guests can really get away with it…

Before the rise of the larger “pop culture exhibitions” in Australia – such as Armageddon and SupaNova, smaller more expensive cons were the only way to meet stars of shows. For your $120, I bet you’ll get a much more up close and personal experience with the stars than the “stand in line for an hour, exchange $40 for an autographed photo and spend 10 seconds (if you’re lucky) with the stars” American model that Supanova and Armageddon run on.

Can someone please ask Michael Shanks if Arctic Blast was meant to be a serious movie or were they just having a laugh?

See Shanks, Doig and Blue, think SG1, SGU and Andromeda.

You would think that, I’ve been to several of these events at this price and they’re good fun.

Yes, but look at how much some Eminem fans paid ($350) just to see and hear (or not) him from afar in the past week. No chance to chat to him, no autographs, nothing but the sight and sound.

At least you can meet the guests at these kind of shows and get a personalised autograph (“To John, love meeting you Lexa Doig”) – in the US, you just get a signature, as they rust thousands of people through a long line.

From what I’ve heard form chatting to the organisers from time to time, it costs a fair bit to bring the actors to Oz – flights, accomodation, venue hire, etc. Divide that by around 200 people and that’s how the pricing kinda works. The more people who come to these events on a regular basis, the cheaper the events can become. (ie same number divided by 250-300 works out cheaper).

Armageddon has thousands of people though the front door. Makes a difference in the pricing.

And the premium tickets (VIP, Platinum, whatever they call them) get much more personal contact with the guests – like at a lunch, or cocktail party or brunch. Plus they get certain autographs and photos with the guests included in the ticket…

It says ‘Stagate Stars’ plural. I only see one Stargate star there. It’s Michael Shanks, some scrawny fishlip, and the kid from that Battlestar Galactica copy.

    *shrug*.

Don’t get me wrong. The guy from SGU is awesome and very talented like the rest of them. SGU just wasn’t stargate for me.
