On Friday morning, my wife gave birth to our second child, albeit seven weeks before she was supposed to. It seems to me that I should probably get one of these wireless baby monitors for when our little princess comes home.
The $249 iBaby monitor looks to be an amazingly comprehensive baby monitor. It has a 350 degree swivelling camera with a 70 degree tilt and two way microphone so you can both speak to your baby and listen to it using the free iOS app, PC or Mac. It can support up to four different people accessing the video feed from different locations, so parents and grandparents can keep tab of baby’s sleeping patterns, and offers automatic alerts for when your baby starts crying or moving. Infrared LEDs on the front of the camera help you to see your child in the middle of the night as well.
The accessory works over 802.11n and offers 640×480 resolution at 30fps streaming (or lower, depending on your connection). Controlling the camera using your iOS device sounds incredibly simple too, with swipes left and right moving the camera side to side, or up and down to adjust the camera’s tilt.
Given my status as a new (second time) dad, this is definitely now joined my wishlist.

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 9:36 AMcongrats nick. i just had my 2nd a few weeks ago too. I personally use this app – http://itunes.apple.com/au/app/baby-monitor/id295777624?mt=8
they’ve made actual baby monitors obsolete and work great

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:31 AMThe science is not in, but call me crazy… I don’t want a mobile phone near my baby making calls to me when she wakes or makes noise.
As for the camera/monitor, I like the idea as I frequently work away so getting to see home and my family appeals and these is something special about a sleeping baby.

you don’t need to have your phone near your baby and uses the same wireless network. even buying a ipod touch for $188 still seems better value for the money. IMO it does the job better but also isn’t a 1 trick pony and cheaper. facetime with kids is great

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 12:58 PMOr… for less than a quarter of the cost, you can buy any off the shelf wireless IP cam off ebay. I have one with infrared, sound, full axis remote motor control and the same resolution. And they work with any device at home. pc, ios, android.
I have one set up for my baby.
Congrats btw :)

Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 2:14 PMI bought a Huawei U8300 when they were going for $29 – full Android phone with wifi, 2MP camera, GPS etc. Run one of the many baby/security monitor apps on that, and you have a dirt-cheap IP webcam that will also work over 3G, or even stream audio/video both ways. No IR or motor, but it can run on battery :-)
They’re still around for $50, as cheap as any IP cam.
