According to the Italian firearms maker, these vents cause gas to discharge symmetrically behind the bullet as it leaves the muzzle. This creates a muzzle brake, which reduces recoil and a “rocket” effect that purportedly helps the round maintain velocity. The vented rounds are composed of a copper alloy and available in many sizes from 9mm up to .30 calibre.
I’m no gunsmith but it does seem odd that the simple addition of vents would have that sort of effect on a bullet’s velocity. Then again, Coors Light vented cans do seem to increase the velocity of my descent into drunkenness, so why wouldn’t vents work for the velocity of my bullets? Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 10:22 AM+1 – some people enjoy reading gun tech, even if we can’t really play with this stuff here in Aus :)

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 2:45 AMTL;DR – To answer your question, yes. Though I’d hardly call it “U.S gun wank”.
I liked this article. Keep them coming.
Just because AU is more sane than the US re: guns & it’s comparatively harder to get a license in AU doesn’t mean it’s impossible & that people aren’t interested. 1000s of sporting shooters in AU have rifle/shotgun/pistol licenses. They all enjoy a sport & obey the (very strict) law. This news is also of interest to readers in law enforcement, the military, even engineers in high-speed airflow dynamics etc. Don’t be so infuriatingly closed-minded.
You might be a closed-minded knee-jerk “guns are bad pls won’t someone think of the children!” kind of guy, but most of us here are rational, level-headed thinkers who can appreciate the tech behind this for what it is. Tech. Science. Development.

Friday, December 9, 2011 at 1:29 AM“Tech Junkies”…, If you want to shoot in Australia of course you can….
After-all this is ‘tech’, and this appears to be a ‘tech’ site… It may not be YOUR Idea of ‘Tech’, or not electronic, not fanboia enough…
Comment, not sure of the “Rocket effect” at all, as there is no jet exiting the central duct, possible the gasses leaving the radial holes down the barrel, cause a lubricating effect be allowing a ‘liquid’ bearing between the projectile and the barrel surfaces to exist….
Noting of course that the article was written tongue in cheek, by someone filling their quota.

Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 2:46 AMPedantic bear is pedantic:
“from 9mm up to .30 calibre.”
9mm (0.354 calibre) is larger than .30 calibre.
And… “I’m no gunsmith”
You’d be talking about a ballistician or ballistics expert – not some guy who works on the guns themselves.
