We got told about it back in October, but the Commonwealth Bank’s Kaching app, offering NFC functionality and the ability to send payments to others, is now officially available.
To use the NFC functionality and pay at PayPass terminals, you’ll need an iCarte case from the bank (costing $49.95 plus $5 postage) and an iPhone 4 or 4S. However, everything else will work on any model of iPhone.
The bank has said an Android version is coming, but hasn’t set a release date. For a fuller overview of what it offers, check out our Kaching first look.

Monday, December 19, 2011 at 12:46 PMThe app may be released, but the mobiles are not automatically enabled for use, The $50 to use the phone as a card is a bit too steep. CBA must offer these for free for early adopters.

Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:05 PMKaching is more than just a NFC chip. $50 is just for those who want to use their phone for PayPass payments.

Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:09 PMYeah, I am not going to pay $50 for a case that they won’t even give me info about. How sturdy is it? Will it protect my phone if it is face down on a table? What affect does it have on battery life? Seriously commbank I need to know more.

Per this quick blog post I threw online earlier this afternoon, I’ve been using the iCarte 420A case for the last few weeks. http://is.gd/KachingUnboxing
It’s a straightforward piece of hardware and does what it claims to do (ie allow the iPhone 4 to make NFC payments). Just thought I’d offer my 2.2c* worth on the hardware questions asked here, so far. (*)includes GST ;-)
Sturdy? In my experience, it’s very robust. Indeed, I don’t give my gadgets the proverbial kid-glove treatment. Normally *no* screen protector, *no* rubbery case etc. The iCarte case survived my day-to-day abuse including drops, bumps, backpack-to-desk-to-backpack action, sliding, coffee spills etc. With the exception of a ‘bruise’ to the top left-hand corner of the case plastic, it still looks like new.
Protect the screen face if dragged across a desk? Perhaps – but if trying to protect the screen is the *primary* purchasing driver then I’d recommend against it. The overhang is <0.5mm. Personally, I've never had any issues with scratching of the Gorilla Glass on my devices (including iPhone 4 and Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet) but your mileage may vary.
Affect on battery life? In my experience, negligible impact. Indeed, I'd say "no affect" except for the fact that I know that it does draw SOME current (5-90mA depending on what it's doing).
My only complaint with the iCarte 420A is that, with the case fitted, I can't use my external battery packs which use the proprietary Apple dock connector without removing it.

Monday, December 19, 2011 at 3:57 PMI’ve got a bog-standard Visa Credit Card (an old one that hasn’t been enabled for wireless payments). I’ve got the Kaching app on my phone. If I get the case, can I use Pay Pass, even though I’m using a Visa?

Monday, December 19, 2011 at 5:03 PMHmmm well so far, so poorly implemented/tested.
Once logged into Kaching it asked me to Accept T&Cs, and then confirm my mobile # via CBAs ‘Get NetCode SMS’, I recieve the SMS and I switch to my messaging App to get the code and attempt to switch back to Kaching but the App reopens and I can never type my SMScode in :(
FAIL.

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 4:09 PMWhy can’t I just stick my PayPass enabled card in my iPhone case?
This seems to be very bulky…
