Despite the recent update that was supposed to fix it, the iPhone Batterygate continues: Many users in the Apple Support forums are reporting that the iPhone 4S battery keeps dropping fast and inexplicably. Here are some examples:
New update is not help at all. I opened Safari and lost 2% just by opening it.
Upgraded to 5.0.1 this morning. Still draining at the exact same rate. [...] I see no difference at all.
Same here. Updated about 1.5 hours ago, battery has drained 20% since then with no usage!
Gizmodo readers are reporting similar problems:
@IamRickB: my battery has drained 40%/2hr
@unsulk: I stand corrected. My 4S battery is draining 1% every 3-4 mins under light use. It was fine before the 5.0.1 update.
The same reader later added in another tweet:
The battery dropped from 100% to 89% without ANY use on my 45 minute drive to work.
Meanwhile, other users are experiencing problems downloading applications over the air with iOS 5.0.1:
Wow, can’t even download apps OTA on iOS 5.0.1…apple just committed a major #chansefail anyone else having this issue?
Another Gizmodo user echoes these updates troubles:
@DurrtyNathaniel: My iPhone hasn’t completed a sync since I have upgraded to either of the iOS 5 updates. It’s so annoying.
Another Gizmodo reader confirms the battery issues plus a couple others:
@gemmasolutions: Battery issue persists with 4S iOS 5.01. Since update, have a problem with apps not sending (iMessage) or loading (App Store) data!
It seems that something is definitely wrong with this update. Too many reports of users having battery problems. Perhaps Apple’s first usage of the over-the-air updating may be bumpier than we expected.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 9:47 AMpeople need to do a proper clean restore! quite often old backup files are the culprits. restore as new on 5.0.1 & you will see the difference

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:09 AMi know with android is you flash your phone a lot it can screw the battery stats and you need to clear them and give full charge then flash it. If you Flash it with 30% battery your phone might think that is 100%

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 12:32 PM+1 may not help for everyone but for anyone that hasn’t done so, restoring should always be top of the list.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 12:49 PMis it really, all attempts to solve it have failed and it doesn’t happen to all of them, there are plenty of people who have no problems. So I’m leaning on the side of poor quality control!

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 12:51 PMSome people have had it, restored and gotten rid of the problem so it can’t be hardware related.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 12:20 PMMy bet is still the Microsoft exchange bug. If you delete and re-add the exchange account. It can fix battery drain.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 1:45 PMMy 4S has no problems at all. I use it all day for work and normally come home with around 80% charge… worst case so far was mid-50′s with heavy use. That is before and after the update.
And yes it is easy peasy to change the battery yourself. I bought a replacement back cover to get something that wont break and it came with the tools, all for under $10. Pop the back cover off and the battery is in plain sight for all to see. New batteries are worth less than a trip through Maccas Drive-Through too.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 11:35 PMI had this problem and nearly took my phone back. Guys, the issue is with the iOS 4 to 5 back ups/restore. I had an iPhone 3GS and 4, so when I got the 4S and it had iOS5 on it, the iOS4 restore ruined the battery on the iPhone 4S. ou do it so you keep numbers, email, and settings but unfortunately you have to just do it all from scratch. Then your battery will be as good as mine. Pass this around. Its the truth, it works, and is the reason I am sure of it.
Good luck.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 1:10 PMEver since I updated, iPhone 4s, text messages and iMessages have gone bonkers!! I’ll get a text, there will b no sound and then 10 mins later the sound will go off like 5 times and randomly during the day it will play the text sound but no text will appear!
What’s going on?

Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 10:10 AMIphone 4 and Ipad both started 50% battery drain overnite after IOS 5, with Cloud off, after IOS 5.0.1 even worse, plus both started cellular data uploads ie. sending data, of 100 to 130mb in the early hours of the morning (when I’m asleep), despite being on the same desk as the wifi modem, and total battery drain overnight. Have had to kill cellular data altogether as all my data used. Before IOS 5 0 1 the biggest data use for a day was 6000Kb, now it is 130Mb without any programs running, no cloud, no email, and this happens on 3G not wifi. Every time phone goes to sleep it seems to turn wifi off and switch to cellular data. I rarely use it, 1 to 2 SMS per day, couple of calls a week, very light data use and I always close any apps fully. Seems I now have a very dumb brick as I can’t risk having data turned on.
