Hybrid TV’s just sent me through a press release touting a “new” TiVo model, available exclusively at Harvey Norman, Domayne and Joyce Mayne for $699. But all is not what it seems.
The new model, dubbed “Tivo XL” isn’t much of a new model. It’s the same old TiVo — we’re now a couple of revisions behind the US when it comes to TiVo features — with an internal 1TB hard drive, rather than the standard 320GB. That equates, according to the press release, into 350 hours of SD (Standard Definition), or 150 hours of HD (High Definition) recording.
I really like my TiVo, and I suspect my kids would explode if it went away — but it’s tough to get excited about a “new” model that’s just a storage upgrade when the TiVo platform overseas offers so much more.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 3:56 PMYawn. Merely a catch-up to the recently announced 1TB Foxtel IQ2.
There’s pretty much zero worth recording on FTA anyway.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11:28 PMI love my TiVo too – but I couldn’t agree more. Without planned obsolescence built in – and mine is still working – why would I upgrade unless I could access more features – such as those being released in the U, S of A? One would think Australia the perfect market anyway – so few of us have cable anyway – and a feature upgrade on TiVO would just enhance the ‘Freeview’ (what a stupid name for normal TV) anyway…it would be win-win for TiVo to upgrade (why not?)

Come on Hybrid bring in the quad tuner model. My partner, the technophobe will actually let me get it as soon as it is released. That’s how user friendly these things are.
