Gizmodo Shooting Challenge: Toast

Gizmodo AU

Welcome to The Gizmodo Shooting Challenge, where Giz readers get to pit their photographic skills against each other for the admiration of their editors on a dedicated theme each week. This week’s challenge: Toast. Take that as slightly singed bread or the clinking of glasses — your choice.

Toast as breadstuff offers lots of scope for creative challenge; there’s the rising smoke from overcooked toast, the melting fluids of just too much butter or the raging fires of the toaster as it explodes. Or perhaps that’s just how I cook toast. Plus, as far as photographic props go, you can’t get much cheaper than toast. Equally, toasting as a celebration opens up possibilities with light, bubbles and good times a-plenty.

So that’s a pretty open-ended brief guys, looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

1. The work must be your own.
2. Photos need to be taken the week of the contest. No portfolio shots please.
3. Explain (briefly) the photography equipment, settings, technique and story behind shot.
4. Email submissions to contests@gizmodo.com.au
6. Include image in email (at least 800px wide)
7. One submission per person.
8. Use the proper SUBJECT line in your email (more info on that below)

Send your best photo by Tuesday, November 8th at 10am AEDT to contests@gizmodo.com.au with “TOAST” in the subject line. Save your files as JPGs, and use a FirstnameLastnameTOAST.jpg naming convention. Include your shooting summary (camera, lens, ISO, etc) in the body of the email along with a story of the shot in a few sentences.

And don’t skip this story part because it’s often the most enjoyable part for us all beyond the great photos!

“much less inexpensive”. That would mean ‘really expensive’, right?

What, you don’t have gold plated toast for breakfast like us regular folks?

(Also — D’oh! Amended now. Thanks.)

“Damn, It’s Wednesday and I need a shooting challenge theme”
    *Looks at breakfast*
“Hmm… Cereal? No that won’t work. OH, Toast! Brilliant. You’ve done it again Alex”

:) Just kidding. Could be some interesting shots. I am honestly not sure where my toaster is…

Utterly deliberate; I’d come up with the plan Tuesday afternoon that it would be a challenge to photograph a mundane object in an interesting way, and toast fits that bill nicely.

Also, did you check the back of that cupboard under the sink? It’s usually there.

What if I set my camera to Auto… is that going to win it for me?
