Milan has terrible air quality. Some of the worst in all of Italy. So architect and developer Stefano Boeli dreamed up away to combat that issue in a practical manner: He’s turning two residential towers into vertical forests.
Dubbed Bosco Verticale, The Creators Project says the structures will provide a home to more than 900 plants and trees which would normally occupy 930sqm of ground in a natural setting. The plants will absorb dust and carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and shield buildings from noise and heat.
And this is hardly a concept. Construction of the towers are well underway right now. [Stefano Boeri via The Creators Project]

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 9:43 AMwhat happens when the tree roots start busting out of the concrete? I just had to spend $20k because a tree in my backyard decided it wanted more space and broke down the retaining wall and cracked all my pool-heating pipes.

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 6:28 PMI think it would look fantastic, but I’d worry about branches falling and hitting pedestrians and if a fire broke out the whole show would turn into a bonfire.

Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 1:49 AMLol goodluck with that. People will just start living and sub-letting where this trees will be and before you know it, you’ll be back to square one with the pollution problem.
You can’t just shove trees into an urban landscape and hope they work. They NEED a niche that humans cannot possibly occupy eg. top-level apartment roofs, walls etc.
