Yeah, I know. That’s not a news story. Not original, and sadly, all too expected. But over at Kotaku, Mark’s got an excellent challenge for the mainstream media when it comes to games coverage. Not so much in terms of which campaigns to run, but a more simple plea — would it be possible to get some coverage that’s actually up to date and accurate? [Kotaku]

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 1:02 PMI love it how the Courier Mail will put a giant frontline headline for one article next to a giant frontline image from another. It’s unintentional comedy gold.
Case in point, we have our ‘First lady of Aussie pop’ apparently labelled as a crazy video game kid.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 4:56 PMYep. You have trouble with humour apparently. I’m so glad you’re aware of it though. :)
So glad.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 1:39 PMThe headline is true though- games do make people violent and insane.
Case in point; Hitler was a Frogger addict, Kiaser Whilhelm loved his Pac Man and Arch Duke Ferdinand was killed over a Counterstrike dispute. Then of course there was the famous case of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 driving Jack The Ripper to commit all those murders… :(

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 5:27 PMImagine if Hitler had been a WoW addict… “I’l invade persecute the Jewish race, right after this raid”.”Il invade Poland soon, just have to find better gear”. “Annexe Austria? But im about to ding!” etcetera and so forth

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 1:43 PMAnything coming from a News Corp publication is utter trash. Read the next few pages and it’s all just rubbish. Not long ago their headline was the wiggles up top and below an invasion from boat people. Those wiggles as boat people are really scary.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 1:50 PMI’ve also noticed that tv news seem to show off old products. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen footage of the original iPhone when there is a story about apple/its competitors.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:00 PMI read this article in the exact paper shown in the photo.
It started with a mother saying that her 13 year old boy doens’t go to school ‘cos he’s playing computer games all the time. Hmmmm…. who bought the computer? … Who bought him WoW? … Who pays for his time cards?…
Come on parents. Don’t point the finger at someone else. It’s your own damn fault. She went on to state that her son get’s violent and aggressive when she tries to stop from playing. Hmmm… don’t you hate it how your computer power cable is involved in a unfortunate scissor accident. When it’s off obviously….
I can understand there are people out there that have serious problems with gaming but it’s similar to other addictions. If I give my 13 year old son cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes or anything else for that matter (Fizzy drink, lollies), I can almost guarantee that they will develop a) Addiction b) Mental Problems c) Health problems.
Anyone agree?

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:50 PMDamn, what job did you have? Was cocaine really able to be picked up for pocket money back then? Damn me and my bike riding, cubby-house building, childhood mentality.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 3:06 PMSo true.. the real problem here is that there is a lack of support for families in these and other situations where the children AND the parents obviously require some form of counseling and/or mediation to learn the necessary life skills to balance things out. I can understand the parent being scared of her 13 year old boy becoming violent with her.. the at-a-glance cause is the game.. but there is obviously a deeper root cause behind the problems.. time-management, values and behaviours all need to be looked at not just in the child but in the parents as well.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:55 PMActually this sounds like a brilliant idea, let gaming addition be classed as a mental disorder, so that i can go on the dole and play wow all day..
*sarcasm*

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:58 PMI watched a respectably dressed business man hit the doors of the train several times on this mornings delayed train – a whole carriage ( that I could see/hear) of people and only one person that got visibly voilent. We could write an article that delayed trains sends commuters voilently crazy, but it was an exception.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 4:04 PMOn a completely different note…
How hard is it to take a landscape photo of the article in question and rotate it? Kylie doesn’t need to be in this headline! Although I probably wouldn’t have read it if it didn’t have her drawing my attention to the paper in the first place. ;-)

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 4:33 PMI’m a 14 year old boy (that doesn’t mean my opinion is any different from yours) and I have to say that I have seen more violent behaviour from kids who were raised think that “nerdy” kids were weird and violent, and they also rejected the idea of those kids being normal. On that note I have seen some violent kids that they would classify as “nerds”, who do nothing but help the “bullies” AND mainstream media obtain a reason to abuse them and embarrass the younger gamer community which actually want some form of respect.

Monday, November 28, 2011 at 6:17 PMToo true mate, I’m 25 now (gamertag / online handle was when I was a bit younger!) but I remember when I was at high school my gamer mates and I wouldn’t talk about gaming around others for fear of being ostracised (spelling?).
The violent kids, in my experience, are the ones who are socially inept. It’s just basic psycology to anyone with half a brain. I just wish that the media never developed a ‘fear-inducing’ culture which leads to this oh and the fact that everything gives you cancer these days….
Ben
Monday, November 28, 2011 at 6:38 PMYeah, one day I would like to see one of these mainstream news reports about gaming, or a news report on any subject for that matter, to use a source which is actually reliable, not a mum who obviously has a problem with parenting and can’t admit that she’s the main problem, like an actual reference to a legit report made by a respectable psychiatrist/person with experience and knowledge on the issue, so that the people who do have an actual mind can see that these reports are either legit or a load of crap.

Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 7:18 AMLike I mentioned before, this has nothing to do with gaming itself. If the same kids were allowed to drink alcohol or anything else that they percieve as fun, who’s to say they won’t get violent / angry when someone tries to stop that. It’s all about their mental state. I agree with some people saying that it can become addictive and in some cases can cause people (NOT ONLY KIDS FOR F— SAKE) to be irrational. But when people start blaming their kids behaviour on computer games, all I hear is a massive cop-out and a lack of responsibility.
