If you ever wanted proof that DSLRs are becoming much more mainstream, this is it. JB HiFi’s selling off the Nikon D3000 — an entry level DSLR, to be sure, and not exactly a sparkling new model, either — for $498 with an 18-55mm lens. Not a pro shooter, but if you wanted it as an entry level step into DSLR photography (say, for example, as a starting point for Gizmodo’s own shooting challenges) it’d be fine. Your suggested outlet’s prices seem good, but do be sure to check all of the details. There’s an $8.58 “surcharge” on the item (wtf is that about?) plus priority shipping to Sydney is around $64. So, $429 + $8.58 + $64 = around $501.
Yep, that sure sounds like a truly great deal to me, and especially given that there’s no local warranty on the item.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 3:16 PMWould love to get a camera for Scuba Diving…if I ever got any good at underwater photography. Though I wouldn’t know if these had housing units for it.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 4:08 PMIf you’re planning to get a DSLR for UW photography, look at the price of housings, ports and strobes first. The camera itself is a pretty small part of the overall cost. I don’t dive anywhere near as much as I used to (the effect of having 2 kids) but when I do I use an old Canon S45 in a cheap Canon housing or when snorkelling I use my Nikon DSLR in one of the Ewa Marine glorified plastic bags. They can both spit out good photos, but they are much more limited than a full blown UW system (though a hell of a lot cheaper).

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 3:21 PMThe D3000 is a really nice camera. The 5000 is only marginally better and the things it does do better are really only of interest to a professional or a really, really serious hobbyist.. which may as well be a pro anyway.
I did a lot of research into these cameras last year and if I had a spare $500 I’d snap this one up without a 2nd thought.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 10:49 PMSeriously this is a terrible deal. I bought this same camera with the same lens LAST year for $470.

Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 10:44 AMThe D3100, the camera that replaced this model, is far better and worth the few extra hundred dollars. Even if you dont ever touch the D3100′s video mode, the improved sensor is a big addition. The twin lens kit, with the 18-55 and 55-200, which’ll be good for beginners, goes for around $800.
