The first time I saw a JVC Videosphere with my own eyes was at a flea market a couple of years ago. I nearly lost my shit at its retro-future goodness and was hellbent on bringing it home with me. Unfortunately, my wallet didn’t agree.
But look at this thing. It looks like Neil Armstrong’s helmet mated with with a TV. It stands out, but it’s still sleek. It looks like very few things which came before it. It was inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. In short, it’s wonderful. But you know, we kind of one-upped our own vision of the future.
First introduced in the early 1970s, the Videosphere was sold up through the early ’80s. There was even a model with an Design aside, I have no idea what purpose a Videosphere would serve in a household today, but if you really want one of your own, start here. There are certainly worse ways to spend $US265. [Etsy]

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 3:56 PMSo… it’s a normal CRT screen but in a spherical casing? Interesting, but with the curved plastic outer cover you’d have a lot of concentrated glare.
And It’s described as “cherry” red on the site- it looks bright orange to me. Is there something wrong with my eyes?

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 5:26 PMI used to work for JVC about 5 years ago. If i had known about this i would have added it back into the forecast !!! So much win.
Mmmmm
Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 8:53 PMMy mum bought my dad one of these for Christmas, brand new, I was about 12 at the time. As other reader have pointed out its a CRT in a sphere but it gets better than that. It was a black and white CRT in a sphere. Remember portable TVs were state of the art. Transistor technology could alow us to make small TVs. Despite having a big furiture type TV we sat there watching this little TV in awe of the technology. Yes it was orange, exactly like it looks in the picture.
