The end of the year is nigh, and that means it’s time to sort out what the best products of the year have been. But this isn’t just about what we think is best; we want your nominations for the year’s best gadgets. The first category up to bat? Laptops.
Was the Macbook Air the best? Or the Vaio Z? Perhaps you think the Dell XPS 14z deserves the nod? Whatever your choice, nominations are now open. There’s only one way to make your choice for laptop of the year known, and that’s by getting noisy in the comments below.
We’ll roll out the rest of the nominations this week, so keep your comments laptop centric for now, and check back next Monday when voting commences!

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:09 PMMacBook Air for mine. It was good enough to lure me from a lifetime of Windows to Mac for the first time, and I have been very happy so far. I have some issues with it, but they are more with the OS, rather than the laptop itself. I am not sure if that’s valid dichotomy, but the build quality, battery, keyboard and especially the trackpad are the best I have ever used. The price is pretty reasonable now too.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:22 PMI’m in the market for a new laptop and was considering the MacBook. I love the design and it’s clearly a very popular laptop, but I’m really concerned about the OS. What issues have you had with it?
Steve
Monday, November 14, 2011 at 6:47 PMIf you’ve never used Mac OS before, then suggest you give it a spin before you take the dive. Ultimately, the Macbook Air is also one of the best Windows laptops out there… And when purchased with a discount (eg Dicksmith’s 10% or education), the price isn’t too bad. Just throw Windows on it.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:17 PMSony Vaio Z. It simply has no competitor and makes the MacBook Air seem frivolous.

I’m not touching this one. Too many people are about brand loyalty rather than bang-for-buck.

Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 10:17 AMWhere does it say anything about “bang for buck”? It says “best” and to me that means money is no object.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 6:52 PMyou’re an idiot. Either nominate a laptop or don’t say anything at all. Loser

Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 4:50 PMWow. I thought Roland had a point but clearly he did not according to you… Laptops are not a one size fits all product. For example there are many nominations for the macbook air but for someone looking for a windows laptop to run a cad program on or gaming, it wouldn’t even be considered. If looking for an ultra portable then obviously it deserves a nomination.
Get off your high horse champ.

Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 4:54 PMAlso as far as nominations go mine is for the 2011 Vaio Z, no way i would purchase one due to cost but i love the look of it and the external graphics card, odd etc.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:49 PMThe Samsung Series 9
is pretty good
MotorMouth
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 10:20 AMSure, but unfortunately it is not as good as the most recent MacBook Air and it costs more. Therefore it can’t be best, I’m afraid.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 5:53 PMSony Vaio Z – definitely the best on the market.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 6:20 PMLenovo Thinkpad E320-
Sure bang for your buck. Bloody cheap and bloody brilliant for power users. Innards are easily accessible/replaceable, best keyboard I’ve used on a laptop so far, wonderful trackpoint (honestly, I don’t know why you’d use a touchpad over a trackpoint). MacbookPro-like design (actually a Thinkpad that doesn’t fail in the looks department this time). About 5-6 hrs battery life on a recent Linux kernel. Ultra portable at 13″ and only 1.74kg. Plus, runs extremely quiet and cool on Sandy Bridge.
Will probably stick with this laptop for quite some time (something that is pretty rare for someone that has gone through as many laptops as me).
MotorMouth
Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 10:31 AMObviously you have a very different idea of what “power user” means than I do, because only about half the specs for that machine measure up to my needs. Core i3 and a HDD simply don’t cut it for me (neither does Linux).

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 6:43 PMBoring year mostly.
I’d probably go with Lenovo U300 for Windows, redesigned MBA for Mac.

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 7:14 PMMacBook Air sure looks like the most impressive from this year. But the MacBook Pro powerhouse also deserves a mention

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 9:44 PMDefinitely the current McBook Air
I’m presently sworn-off Apple kit until they stop being douchebags in the software realm (And let’s face it, that’ll be never), so some might think me a “hater”. Nevertheless, the current Air stands head and shoulders above any competitor, yet costs less than any of them.
Personally I have a Dell XPS L502X with backlit keyboard and 1080p display options. The screen and sound are amazing, but the case is mostly ugly and I doubt many others would like it.

NOZ
Monday, November 14, 2011 at 10:29 PMOk. I wont say which store i work for…but, laptop of the year definately macbook pro 13inch at $1399…sure current trends are showing a shift to macbook air…but i still dont think its worthy of ‘of the year’ status. Put it this way… In a market where sales are utterly screwed for retail stores, people are still willing to pay a premium for apple products…apple draws them in…apple products are seen as the items to have. And for people making the transition its the 13 inch macbook…more noteably the MC700x/a as opposed to newly released model. People jumping ship to apple seem to prefer the Pro to the Air because of the Dvd drive…not that they need it,but the perception is that they do. Also trying to convince people that 128GB of space is still a lot for the average user is hard-er. Next year i think Air/Ultrabook style will be in. But based on sales. Definately Macbook Pro 13inch takes my pick… That said, I still dont nor will i ever have one.
