It’s pretty hard to appreciate just how blazingly fast top-tier marathon runners are going for 42km. So this video ad for the NYC Marathon lets you attempt a marathon pace for just 18m. Nobody could do it.
The video wall features Olympian Ryan Hall, who with a mile pace of 4:46 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and a stride length of 6 feet 10 inches (2m), is probably some sort of cyborg Darpa project and not an actual human. Now we just need video walls to demonstrate how much stronger, smarter, funnier and better-looking other singular humans are. Thank you for both shattering our self-esteem and leaving us in awe of the human species. [Reddit]

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 1:24 PMwhat a stoopid article… of course a world class athete already at pace is impossible to catch, how about a 50-100m from a stand up start.. then you’d see that they aren’t that fast, the runners will still pull away but the gap wouldn’t be so large..
This demo is like the old trick of telling a child that if they can catch the $100 bill that is dangling halfway down between their fingers they can catch it by trapping it between their fingers…
Its all about reaction times

Monday, November 14, 2011 at 4:39 PMRyan runs approximately 3min kilometers, 42 times over. I think the longer the distance, the larger that gaps going to get.
