BlackBerry London To Be First BBX BlackBerry?

The Verge has a photo of what looks like a Porsche Design BlackBerry slapped with a large all-encompassing touchscreen. The device supposedly replaces the ‘Colt‘ as the first BBX-equipped smartphone to come out of Waterloo, Canada.

The London is rumoured for a June/Q3 2012 release, so we’re not talking any time soon here. But the device is supposedly packing a TI OMAP dual-core chip at its heart, clipping along at 1.5GHz. It’ll also have 1GB of RAM, 16GB of flash storage and two shooters: one 8MP on the back and one 2MP front-facing. Not bad specs for right now, but for Q3 next year, who knows. Lets hope whatever RIM does with its QNX-based BBX, it handles touchscreen input better than BlackBerry OS. [The Verge, BGR via Gizmodo UK]

I missed the “phone” bit first time through. That makes it even more incredible. A design like this could be quite practical, too. Imagine if the bottom bit was the battery and it just clips on. It could be replaced with a bigger one for power users who struggle with battery life. That would be amazing! If this thing turns out to be real it will be a game-changer for RIM, much as the original RAZR was for Motorola. i.e. a phone that would take the focus away from OSes and ecosystems.

i love Blackberry and have been a supporter/buyer since the first Perl came out, but RiM dropped the ball with the storm and just added salt to the wound with the storm 2 (i loved both phones – but were just way too many problems)

this is definitely getting RiM back on track, but a release date still 18 months away? RiM come on!!

I really have to side with the author, release in 18 months time is way too long.
