Where Can You Get A Galaxy Nexus In Australia Right Now?

Gizmodo AU

Want one right now? Well you can’t have one. But the local grey importers have started offering pre-orders on imported models.

We’ve covered the pros and cons of grey market importing previously, and all the usual caveats apply with the Galaxy Nexus, naturally enough. While they undoubtedly aren’t alone, it’s worth noting that Mobicity’s offering up the Galaxy Nexus for pre-order at $829, while Kogan’s price-cutting just a little at $799. What do you reckon? Worth jumping on the pre-order bandwagon, or waiting to see a few more prices and options? [Mobicity and Kogan]

As long as the model you get is 850 compatible, then yes.

Galaxy Nexus runs at 4G (LTE or HSPA+).
Better of getting Telstra 4G if you live in CBD.

The LTE version is NOT compatible with Telstra’s 1800MHz system here in Australia.

Does this phone have NextG compatibility as standard or are there different models?

There are 2 different models released, LTE and HSPA+.

I haven’t reviewed which ones MobiCity/Kogan are selling, but their do say this:

      MobiCity:
      Network Band GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, 3G 850 (NextG/Vodafone 850/US3G), 3G 900 (Optus YesG/Vodafone 900), 3G 1700, 3G 1900, 3G 2100
      Recommended Networks Optus 2G, Optus 3G 900, Telstra 2G, Telstra NextG, Vodafone 3G 850, Three, Vodafone 2G, Vodafone 3G 900

      Kogan:
      2G Network – GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
      3G Network – HSDPA 850 (Telstra, 3) / 900 (Optus, Vodafone, 3) / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, 3)

Is it that hard to read?

Yeah, we can read, but do you notice how none of that mentions anything about the upcoming 4G networks in Australia? I want to know if an imported phone will work on *those*, or if it’ll be stuck on the 3G frequencies forever.

Also, on the few phones I’ve actually looked at on Mobicity, they seem to list the same frequencies on everything, so I’m not sure if they’re actually correct, or just rubber stamping every listing.

I don’t think it’s really up to retailers to ensure compatibility of networks that don’t even exist yet; though fair point regarding future-proofing for 4G.

From what I’ve read though, Telstra’s LTE network operates on 1800, which is listed only as a GSM frequency for this particular model.

In regard to MobiCity failing to list actual frequencies, if they are it’s a lazy practice – but I’d be surprised if that actually were the case. As one of the most predominant grey-importers of phones, I’d be far more likely to trust their credibility than Kogan’s!

Telstra will cease to use the 2100mhz freq in Jan/Feb next year (they’ve never had a 3G 2100mhz network but relied on Vodafone) but since it has 850mhz HSPA you’ll be fine. The LTE model seems to say its for America only as they will be using 700mhz for LTE i think while Telstra plans on using 1800mhz. If you do buy then just get the HSPA+ model

I’ll be holding off till at least July before I pick up the Galaxy Nexus – though I have all intents on obtaining one.

I just can’t warrant that price tag, and with the Nexus S currently selling for <$300 after being launched at a similar time last year, I imagine the Galaxy Nexus will be similar.

The Nexus S you get here is crap. SUPER LCD.

I have the AMOLED one and you can tell the difference when you have them side by side.

      • [–]

        Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 4:15 PM

Of course there will be a noticeable difference if you hold the two side-by-side, but that’s not how people use phones is it?

Sure, AMOLED does have a viewing edge over Super LCD, but I don’t find the display on my phone pokey by any means, and from reports I’ve read – Super LCD is actually easier on the battery than AMOLED; and battery life is a far bigger problem for me than what shade of black my screen shows.

Looks like it works out to be £458 incl. delivery to import from clove.co.uk (~AU$708 using xe.com/ucc)…that’s kind of tempting…

So galaxy nexus is quintuple band hspa+?

I kinda want this, but not sure if I want to go bigger then my SGSII. I just wish they could have knocked 1mm width of each side of the bezel and kept it the same width as the SGSII… thou 2mm will it really matter…

I’d argue that pre-ordering a product without an exact release date is super risky…

Why? Nearly all online shops have pre-order guarantee. You can cancel at any time without financial penalty and if the price rises before release, you’ll get a warning and an option to continue the pre-order or drop-out. They’re not binding.

I’m looking forward to see what kind of lawsuit apple will throw at the Galaxy Nexus to prevent it’s sale. I’ll be getting one of these when my i9000 contract finishes up.

Clove.co.uk has it for pre-order as well, it’s around $660 before delivery (probably $690 after delivery). And they aren’t grey market importer/exporters either.

Just a quick edit, Clove’s UK price is £429.00, so whatever that converts to (my price above was rough estimation).

“why would you WANT to buy anything by Samsung”

Like the panels in every smartphone worth buying you mean?

Or like the panels in most monitors and TVs worth buying?

Or perhaps like the panels in every tablet worth buying?

Perhaps because Samsung have in recent times consistently demonstrated that they are one of the best tech manufacturers in the world?

As has been proven many a time, Samsung merely rebrand existing products, so while their shit may be in most things, they most certainly aren’t originally theirs.

        Nice try sperglord.
