Zounds! So this is what my ex-girlfriend meant when she said sex with me was akin to “carnal relations with an empty husk”. Too much web porn! It’s killing our libidos, lads, one frantically one-handed mouse click at a time.
So says a report from the University of Padua in Italy anyway, which purportedly discovered that randy gents with a penchant for hardcore sex on the internet were more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction when preparing to perform the real deal themselves.
The study focused on late teens and men in their 20s, and the crux of its findings was that the ever-increasing and diversifying selection of online porn and porn experiences has actually led to a numbing of men’s pleasure receptacles, specifically to the response of dopamine (the “reward” neurochemical).
By hammering on the reward button so often and with such a wide range of experiences, internet porn effectively subdues or eliminates the physiological sense of reward that sex so wonderfully provides.
Ergo, when she’s lying there naked waiting for you, you realise that the whole situation feels a bit numb, you get subconsciously scared, and then things stop working. Awkward!
Worse still, the study apparently found that “quitting” web porn created a whole host of withdrawal symptoms. Insomnia, flu-like symptoms — all of which, in my opinion, pale in comparison to the actual ED that sets it all off.

- So a university does a study and makes findings and then a Technology reporter decides it isn’t true because of his vast experience. Great work Gizmodo sure science is wrong and you are right.

- So a reader of a technology site misunderstands the tone of the author because of his vast experience with knowing what other people are thinking.

”purportedly’
appear or claim to be or do something, esp. falsely; profess: she is not the person she purports to be.’
Steve
Monday, October 24, 2011 at 3:37 PMI am not sure where you got that definition.
Purportedly; stem is purport. definition: Profess; be intended to seem. have as its meaning. (Pocket Oxford Dictionary, 2000)
believed or reputed to be the case (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Your phrase “she is not the person she purports to be.” say she is NOT; purports – this is who she says she is. Not – what she purports is false.

It’s pretty much accepted by most sociologists and psychologists. The rise of internet, video-gaming, and easy access hardcore porn has turned the modern male into a rather…different creature than he used to be.
The issue with internet porn is that after a while, you begin to distance yourself from the characters altogether, the pornstars become gyrating sacks of meat, you can hit it up for instant gratification, and human nature dictates you grow bored and start looking elsewhere for stimulation.

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 1:32 PMMy experience says it’s true! Quit and you’ll be set free. Don’t quit and suffer the following consequences: time wasting, depression, feelings of sexual inadequacy, shorter sex sessions, and a weaker overall relationship with your partner, not to mention that you’ll slowly but surely descend into a state of total perversion, not cool.

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 1:51 PMIt’s the same as snacking on junk food – snack too much and you lose your appetite for your real meals.
If you just spare a true moment to THINK about it from a logical point of view, it actually makes sense.

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 2:03 PMEh, I seem to have a really high libido so I’ve found even with regular sex I usually wanna watch porn on occasion. I really don’t find anything negative about that though, actual sex always feels FAR better than having a fap to porn and I’ve never had any problems being interested/staying interested in actual sex cause of porn.
In saying that I’m not saying I’ve never had problems though. I’ve experienced problems with sex but that was when I was getting hardly any in a relationship that was going downhill and I had some pretty bad performance anxiety(and just general anxiety too). I’ve never really had any problems related to watching porn while also getting regular sex, and honestly I do watch a lot of porn, so I find their findings a bit weird. Maybe what I consider “a lot of porn” isn’t actually that much according to this report?
Regardless I aint actively quitting porn, I’ve tried that before and it just leads to me being incredibly stressed out and unable to focus properly, definitely detrimental. Of course the more actual sex I get the less I watch porn though, so if it happens organically then that’s totally cool.

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 4:50 PMYes well, everyone jerks off, even when you’re married with an active sex life. There’s nothing saying masturbation as an adjunct to healthy sexuality is a bad thing.
The issue comes from lonely single guys who use internet porn exclusively (and regularly) to satisfy their libidos, thus have little real incentive to apply themselves with real women and on occasion they do, are completely impotent.

Monday, October 24, 2011 at 5:38 PMI agree, but the report doesn’t have this sort of specificity. The statements are pretty darn generalized, which really isn’t very helpful ImO. There should at least be some data on frequency of use, “hardcore-ness” (woo makin’ up words! :P) of content viewed or other factors like that to make this data actually useful.
