A Nestlé Purina PetCare commercial airing in Europe right now has spliced in a high-pitched sound, similar to a dog whistle, inside the commercial to capture a dog’s attention. I guess once they see that commercial they’ll want to eat Purina PetCare products, right? Either way, the high frequency might be able to grab a dog’s attention and have the dog’s owner think the dog really wants that food. Good idea!
Check out the commercial here (preferably with your dog):

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 3:31 PMReminds me of the song released a few years ago in New Zealand that only dogs could hear ‘A Very Silent Night’.
It was a Christmas fundraser.

You can ‘hear’ the song here. . .

But you have to buy the actual CD for the dogs to actually hear it.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 3:31 PMHow bloody ridiculous! I actually buy Beneful for my mut, but she has a shorter attention span than I do, and that’s saying something! This is for the poor idiots that think their dog gives a crap about what you put in their bowl. Now if they invented smellavision,… that would get her attention! #]

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 4:41 PMNot to mention that any lossy audio format would be throwing away this high frequency information because it’s not in the human range of hearing. duh.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 5:23 PMI can hear every supposed animal device that humans cant hear. Rodent control devices that emit a high frequency sound to keep rodents out of the house. Painful. Dog Whistles, even more painful and those bloody push button devices to punish naughty cats. Excruciating.
I can’t hear anything from this embedded commercial though, so maybe I’ll be right. Still, it’s a bad idea.
I put it down to the constant high pitched ringing in my ears that I have 24/7 called tinnitus. I personally believe that it’s opened up the higher frequency sound range as my tinnitus rings at a pretty high frequency itself.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 7:59 PMThe pining in this is pretty obvious, maybe you just didn’t notice it?
I have normal hearing myself and heard nasty pings here just fine, so maybe the youtube version of this has “normalised” the sound levels?

Friday, October 7, 2011 at 12:04 AMIt worked with my cat, well kind off. When the ad stared to play my cat looked up and then ran out of my room.

Friday, October 7, 2011 at 12:01 PMUnfortunately, basic television sets and cheaper pc speakers can not produce any of these sounds. You need high range stuff to do this.
