Microsoft Serves Up Some Mango To All Eligible Phones Worldwide

A month after Windows Phone 7.5 began shipping, Microsoft announced today that it is now pushing the Mango update to every eligible phone worldwide, regardless of carrier — with only three exceptions.

The only exceptions are the Samsung Omnia 7, Dell Venue Pro, Samsung Focus 1.4, all of which are still in testing. In addition, Microsoft is also hinting at a possible firmware update at some point next week. The update should improve performance, fix bugs and activate new the new Mango features — the most important being Internet Sharing. The firmware update does vary by handset maker and won’t be sent en mass like the main update, so don’t freak if you don’t get one. [WinRumors]

It’s only possible because MS has been extremely strict with the hardware requirements for WP7, meaning OS updates have far less variability to take into account.

Then again… MS manages to update Win7 on a regular basis and that’s running on everything from netbooks to quad-SLI octo-core monster-PCs. Hrm.

Besides that, what is it with Samsung handsets? NoDo had similar issues…

Also possible because the carriers don;t get the source code or control of the WP7 code. MS is complete control and can there send out updates, like it does for windows.

On Android every manufacture builds from source and makes there own code changes. It is not possible for a single company to update all Android phones because they all use different code.

Of course bother approaches have their good and bad sides.

There is nothing wrong with Samsung updates. Some carriers were clearly scared to sent out the wrong update so they held off. I on the other hand got my Samsung Omnia 7 update the minute Mango was unleashed nearly a month back and It’s been fine.

@TSH – I think microsoft’s strategy is clearly paying off for their customers. I’d be getting pretty excited if my one year old WP7 was just about to get a massive OS upgrade rather than the android middle finger.

Yep Omnia 7 user with Optus, and got the Internet sharing feature a day ago. Finally my Omnia is starting to get close to the functionality of my old HTC Touch HD with Winmo.

I used the trick they exposed here to update my omnia 7 to mango immediately upon release. Works fine, and everything seems to click together much better. If only i could have my search provider set to google instead of bing toh :(
