Aside from a bad can of beans, an F/A-18E jet about to land on top of you is the easiest way to shit your pants in the Navy. Last month these clueless sailors were almost vaporised.
Luckily, DefenseTech explains, the pilot was informed that there were dudes in his path and was able to abort his landing just in time — it would have been a very messy day of scrubbing the deck otherwise. [DefenseTech]

I’d reword it as “last second” as “last minute” would have been a hundred yards or so away.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 4:06 PMConsidering there is a break in the vid, I wouldn’t put too much credence in that piece of nonsense!

Friday, October 7, 2011 at 12:23 AMYes, and those people walking around on the deck are CGI. In fact, I’ll bet you’re thinking the whole show is a Pixar production, right Ecky? I mean, you did a bit of research to check the authenticity of the video before you opened your trap, didn’t you? Oh wait. I forgot who I was talking to. My bad. Guess I’m being gutless again.

Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 10:00 PMYep, as I’ve said elsewhere, Ecky seems to bring out the inner troll in many a Gizmodo or Lifehacker contributor.
This isn’t Allegorygator’s first go at Ecky either!
But boy oh boy when the Trolls come out they are rabid, never read what he actually writes and invariably go off on tangents. Go Ecky!
BTW WTF did CGI come from?

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 5:50 PMThe break in the video is nothing more than a change of camera angle so they can compare the approach and the actual touchdown position on the deck. This is a standard aircraft carrier landing recording that the LSO’s use to “rate” the landing during the post flight briefing. Dispite the break you can clearly see that in the second part of the video that the 2 men are walking across the deck when the aircraft goes around.

Friday, October 7, 2011 at 10:12 AMNothing to see here, just the pilot doing a go around cause there was something on the deck. Standard practices for any pilot when something is in the touchdown area. I am sure the sailors are used to that sort of thing.

Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 11:57 PMIt’s a vid worth looking at closely.
The grappling of an aircraft ‘at no return’. Sensors were employed to detect ‘human forms’ (in it’s way) and make a ‘run off’.
You can see that, in the glide path the plane makes, after detection. It’s allowed to detect & fly away. It looks sloppy yet the pilot must still be engaged(and corrected/facilitated), right to the last minute.
It’s being recovered by electronics/glide path.
Hint: the pilot wasn’t in control of the recovery.
