Can You Print Porn With Apple’s Cards App?

Gizmodo AU

Apple’s Cards app allows you to take photos and have them printed up as cards from anywhere on the planet. But can you use it to print explicit card images? Short answer: No. Long answer: Probably not, and please don’t send me the results if you do.

Apple gave me a demo of its cards products just after launch; while I can’t think of too many instances where I’d personally drop $4.99 on one of them, that’s got more to do with my innate desire to save a penny rather than spend it. I couldn’t fault the print quality or utility of the service per se. Nice if you like that kind of thing, in other words.

I was, however, a little curious as to how Apple was working as a gatekeeper for the service. Sure, most folks will just take pictures of Junior on the beach, or the Eiffel tower or what have you, but then there are those other folks. You know who you are. Beyond even the “taking pictures of your junk” aspect, there’s also the tricky question of copyright. An enterprising IP pirate could photograph an existing card, or a movie still, or whatever took their fancy.

So I posed the question as politely as I could, and awaited a response. Here’s the official line from Apple

The restrictions on what will be printed on Cards are the same as for our other print products and are posted here:

I wouldn’t say that its an Apple moral policy but more likely tan attempt to protect themselves from idiots printing things that trolls will try to sure Apple for “allowing”.

What? Why would you? And I guess more importantly why does it matter? If you’re willing to spend $5 to get a photo printed I say let it be a photo of whatever the hell you like. It’s not like photo printers and paper are a new thing, we’ve not had issues where there are thousands of copies of the Mona Liza on Ebay.

In practise I doubt it’ll matter too much. I don’t think this system would be private enough for anyone that wanted to print porn for whatever reason… The copyright thing is a lot more dodgy, it’s not a printer’s role to be a copyright guardian because they can have no conception of the backstory or any rights you may or may not have, so the very idea is completely ridiculous.

It does lend an interesting insight into what the net might have been like if Apple had been the dominant platform instead of Microsoft though- given Job’s prim attitudes and love of control I can imagine it as being a very, very different place to what we have now.

you’ve obviously never worked in a place that prints photos, you’d be surprised at what some people will print

How is this different from taking a photo and printing it out like we’ve been doing for over a decade?
