AMD’s 8-Core Bulldozer CPU Is Here At Last

More than a year after its inception, AMD’s eight-core FX CPU (codename: Bulldozer) is finally available for purchase. The chip is geared towards resource heavy applications, such as HD video editing and multi-display gaming.

Also worth noting is that the high-end chip, which runs at a base speed of 3.6 GHz, has been left unlocked for those interested in overclocking. AMD says that with around $100 in cooling parts, the chip can run at around 5GHz. And just in time for Battlefield 3, too! [AMD]

CPU Name | Cores | CPU Friequency | Approx. AUS Pricing
FX-8150 | 8 | 3.6 GHz (3.9GHz Turbo Core, 4.2GHz Max Turbo) | $285
FX-8120 | 8 | 3.1 GHz (3.4GHz Turbo Core, 4.0GHz Max Turbo) | $235
FX-6100 | 6 | 3.3 GHz (3.6GHz Turbo Core, 3.9GHz Max Turbo) | $200
FX-4100 | 4 | 3.6 GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Core, 3.8GHz Max Turbo)| $129

but all for naught :( look up the benchmarks, it’s even with the 2500k in multi-threaded applications, but for single-threaded apps even AMD’s own previous gen Phenoms are beating it.
Even though I’m an Intel fan, this makes me sad. Competition is good for everyone, especially the consumer.

CPUs are fairly pointless past ~3ghz @ 2 cores….save your money, invest in a better gpu.

Yea no. For you maybe, for others no. And you do realise your CPU can bottle neck your GPU right?

…cpu can bottleneck your gpu if your using a freakin 20$ cpu…dont give me that garbage.

They are using games to in-part advertise their product…at some point (and its a really cheap point), cpu’s no longer bottleneck your system for GPU intense applications.

Depennds what you’re using it for CharlieM.

I do a lot of 3D work, and with the software that I use, a decent GPU is useless compared to CPU’s..

I am very interested in seeing what they can do once the 2cpu to 1thread aspect of these chips has been properly patched into win7.

Ram bottleneck at 10GHZ psecosror speed? Need DDDDDR RAM? Crazy speeds. It sounds just like the supercar enthusiasts, with thier super-mega-turbo-charged 36 cylinder engines. Can do 330MPH, but the engine’s so big that you can’t see over it, and the car can’t even get over speed bumps.
