Will Windows 8 Let You Make Phone Calls?

Will your new Windows 8 slate be a giant phone come 2012? Screens from last week’s BUILD conference seem to indicate that. How it’ll be implemented is hazy — VOIP or Windows Live notifications — but it’s a good bet Microsoft’s recently-bought Skype will be a BIG part of it.

hmm considering win8 metro GUI IS based on the win7 phone GUI I’m not surprised on missed calls showing up … and it MS owning skype it’s likely to be a real feature of win8.

To me it makes sense that phones and slates should run the same OS, as they are basically equally capable, hardware-wise. My phone is certainly an order of magnitude more powerful than the first Pentium 166MHz PC I used to run 3D Studio Max on, so why shouldn’t Win8 be able to run on it, at least sans the desktop side of things? It would definitely usher in the era of devices like Motorola Atrix, which I think is the real long-term future of personal computing. Intel’s Lightpeak/Thunderbolt would seem to be the perfect interface, it (or something similar) just needs to be adopted as a standard across the board.

yup, i could see a bluetooth headset + tablet + skype being the way they’ve put this together, and as long as the call quality was at least as good as the quality on my phone, i’d be interested in trying it.

Oh this is just another win for MS, they’re doing everything right at this point in terms of Windows 8.

With integrated SKYPE, they could take a huge chunk out of the entire mobile phone industry. If I had a PC with built-in 3G/4G that was about the size of an 8″ P Series Vaio, i.e. fits in a biggish pocket, and it could make phone calls via a Bluetooth headset, I don’t think I’d bother with a phone any more. Who would?

Alternatively it could be reporting the status of your Windows Phone 7, something like the functionality of DeskSMS.

Who in there right mind would buy this OS… it looks disgusting. turning a pc into a wannabe tablet. we buy windows OS because we like the Interface. most people will be sticking with windows i predict untill Microsoft realise there mistake.
