Or… something. Technically, Vodafone’s not actually said what it’s opening up registration for, but Gus has noticed over at Lifehacker that it’s possible to register with Vodafone for… something. Given the general level of hype, it’s not a shocking idea to suggest this might be the iPhone 5. It leaves me wondering — what would your legal obligations for signing up for… something be, exactly? Monday, September 26, 2011 at 5:26 PMNo legal obligations. You don’t get to reserve the smartphone, just get to tell them you’re interested. It’s a marketing tool.
“Here’s the best bit.
Once the smartphone you’ve been waiting for has been released, we’ll let you know straightaway so you can upgrade anytime to get the phone you want.”

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 5:42 PMMaybe a Nokia Windows Phone device?
Who am I kidding, there is only one group in the world that would register for an unannounced phone.
At this point I think people would line up for the iPhone 5 even if the only point of difference between it and an iPhone 4 was that the new model gave you herpes.

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 5:51 PMExtra value!
That said, the Apple camp I personally know is currently divided into people who aren’t very discerning and just use something that works and they’re comfortable with, and the ones who’ll get it because it’s an iPhone. And it’s the latter who’ll flock to this vague announcement.

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 5:44 PMWow this hits pretty close to what I think of the mindset of the unthinking Apple fanbase legion (didn’t want to used that all-inciting f-word).
“Register interest for something you know nothing about! We know you’ll buy it regardless. It will be shiny!”
That said, we have seen iOS5 & it does address a lot of issues, and their hardware is generally decent. See? I can acknowledge both good AND bad points. I win at internet arguing.

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 8:50 PMYou fail however, at mentioning that apple is running the iCult at the moment. I am sickened by how people seem to praise apple, i refuse to get another apple device ever.
i am a ifanboi no more

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 6:21 PMI would say it’s the iPhone 5. Vodafone are playing it smart with this. The past iPhone releases have lead to stock shortages so I guess this way they can allocate more stock from Apple. Even though I think most who do register will think it’s something else.

Monday, September 26, 2011 at 9:06 PMIf it’s a iPhone 4S or similar than I won’t be getting it. But if it’s a true upgrade, yes I will.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 5:11 PMLegally speaking -
Even if there was a clause in the signup process that roped you in for $$$ it would be invalid because a contract needs “consideration”. That is, some form of sufficiently defined promise from both ends. Voda offering “something” is not a defined promise, so there is not a valid contract.
