The Marijuana Of Virtual Surround Sound

Yamaha has a history of making excellent sound bars — some of which cost as much as a full set of speakers. This new $US300 model is the gateway drug of all-in-one systems: It’s so gonna get your broke-ass hooked.

The 35 x 4 x 4 inches YAS-101 packs a 120-watt digital amplifier, two midrange drivers, and a built-in sub to shake the ol’ abode. But where’s the sound coming from? I DON’T KNOW. THE ROOM IS LIKE SPINNING! Or maybe that’s the virtual surround sound software, which is designed to simulate 7.1-channel audio. Is high-quality surround sound possible for 300 clams? Seems like a reach, but Yamaha knows their sound bars, so we’re stoked to find out. [Yamaha]

    gateway drug reference? :(
gateway drug term is coined for those weak enough to get hooked on any ‘hard’ drug.

    but still sweet speakers =)>

I thought gateway drug was a term used by the media and governments to justify excessive laws and regulations of substances that, compared to legal drugs, are relatively harmless?

Or to stay on topic, why doesn’t Giz do an article weighing up the pros and cons of all the available sound bars, they seem to do something once every few months on a new product, but in general there seems to be very little information on them around versus thousands of pages of audiophiles comparing and contrasting speaker systems.

Or have I just answered my own question? Thing is I really want surround sound, but I don’t want the cables.
