Lunchtime Deal: WD TV Live $99

Gizmodo AU

Western Digital’s handy little digital streaming box is cheaper than I’ve ever seen it before at Officeworks right now; a measly $99 will net you one. It doesn’t handle absolutely every format out there, but it’s unobtrusive and for the most part just works.[Officeworks via OzBargain]

…not many people USE every format out there. The only problems I’ve had with mine are occasional freezing when it’s been left on and not used for a few days, quickly solved but a quick power off/on.
It works absolutely stunningly, as I have a hard drive attached to it I actually use it as my media server, rather than streaming off a PC/NAS, it runs flawlessly playing on the TV even while someone is accessing the hard drive across the network.

These are the greatest… i cant recommend them enough!

They still get updates which actually bring added functionality. Works seamlessly with a D-Link wireless G usb stick hanging out of it and streams HD from my WD Sharespace NAS… good times

It’s looking like CatchOfTheDay.com.au will be selling these for $49 on Tuesday.

Or not. Seems unlikely that it’ll be one of the six deals that gets picked.

In all seriousness… the formats it can’t play aren’t really worth making note of anyway. They really are few and far between…

I love mine to bits!! :)

It supports mkv x264. What other formats does one need?

I have a question about these, do they have any internal storage at all? Or do the just serve it up?

The original model I have is still going strong, though it can’t handle any mkv glitches, but changing the container to Transport Stream gets around that. And the original cant output DTS to stereo, which is annoying.

Ive had one of these for quite some time now. They are fantastic machines!

Get an external drive that doesnt need an additional power supply.

Also, forget about Apple TV or T-box or any of those others. If you download tv shows and movies the WDTV Live is the perfect device for you!

It plays full 1080p and, besides Flash movies, Ive never had a problem with it not playing anything.

occasional problems with audio sync when rewinding/pausing mkv. Other than that perfect – you can set the output resolution to what ever you want, and its scaler is very nice – much recomended to owners of older TVs and projectors – it will even convert HD to old interlace, which can be very handy if you travel with it and encounter older TVs. Oh, and you can plug two drives in at once and it copes fine with NTFS. recomended, but get the latest firmware.
