Commissioner Kelly said that he wanted the city to be able to be able to defend itself against nearly any scenario without relying on the federal government. And if that meant securing anti-aircraft missiles, so be it:
Pelley: Do you mean to say that the NYPD has the means to take down an aircraft?
Kelly: Yes, I prefer not to get into the details but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation.
Pelley: You have the equipment and the training.
Kelly: Yes.
I’m not sure if I’m more shocked or relieved that this is in place. As a New Yorker, I appreciate all the time and attention that goes into counter-terrorism in this city. But every now and then the local police department having this kind of capability makes me take a step back and realise how crazy it is. [60 Minutes, AP via Fark]

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 8:58 AMA big part of the problem is perception! I have no doubt that most people choose to see it as ‘making them safer’ rather than the more scary ‘losing your freedom’! It’s a lot easier to justify that way.
Then add to that, the incredibly bad education system, which itself is in meltdown! #}

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 9:02 AMThis is most definitely a capability that belongs in the hands of the military and not the police.
These two bodies are and need to remain completely separate.
Ridiculous.

Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 12:31 PMEither way their response time better be damn fast, otherwise the plane just hits a building before anyone can react.

Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11:54 PMdoes anyone else think that having flaming wreckage raining down on the city if it ever came down to that eventuality could also be bad, in that you could have a lot of smaller fires starting in many buildings?
