Sure they had lists before but they are much more prominent now. You can view the feed from certain lists and also hover over something on someone’s profile and choose which lists to put them into. Both these features are exactly the same as features of Google+. Facebook also adds smart-lists which is nice.
The subscriptions are also a response to the one-way following of people like in Twitter and Google+.
But no, the recent layout change wasn’t stolen…
