Woolworths Grammar Fail, Before And After

Gizmodo AU

Giz reader @thewilkshake noticed this fine piece of wording at a Woolies in Adelaide. Unable to stand the lack of capitalisation and odd use of apostrophes, he set about fixing it. I just hope he works there! Actually, more kudos to you, good sir, if you don’t!

I think it’s Spelling Man who corrects incorrect spelling everywhere.

Spelling Man’s logo is a red squiggle, while Grammar Man’s is a green squiggle.

Sometimes the both parter up together to tackle the most malevolent of crimes against the English language.

I don’t believe so. Turn it into a question: “Who wrote the sign?” You’d answer with, “He wrote the sign.” – so ‘who’ is correct.

I believe you mean “the guy by whom that sign was made”.

Yes the capitalisation was bad, however, I was under the impression that using an apostrophe on certain plurals was acceptable (if not encouraged), in numbers, acronyms and one/two letter words to avoid confusion. For example, “mind your P’s and Q’s”, as opposed to, “mind your Ps and Qs”, which may be confusing.

      Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 5:05 PM

No, not acceptable. Common perhaps, but not acceptable. Along similar lines, you often see 80′s, 90′s. That’s also wrong, it should be ’80s, ’90s. Ps and Qs is correct, P’s and Q’s is wrong by any measure, unless you count sheer volume of numpties getting it wrong as a measure.
