The Most Stupid Conversation That Ever Took Place At NASA

Hillary Greenbaum has the story of the two NASA logos: The classic and current Meatball and the discarded Worm. It details the most absurd conversation between NASA Administrator Dr James Fletcher and Deputy Administrator Dr George Low:

Fletcher: I’m simply not comfortable with those letters, something is missing.
Low: Well, yes, the cross stroke is gone from the letter A.
Fletcher: Yes, and that bothers me.
Low: Why?
Fletcher: (long pause) I just don’t feel we are getting our money’s worth!

The Worm was introduced anyway. Then, a few years after this conversation, the Meatball was restored in all its retro glory. Personally, I love them both. [The 6th Floor]

That conversation probably cost the US tax payers $100,000.

Many, many wasted years in graphic arts, printing, ad agencies and studios and all I can say is that that NASA conversation ain’t got nothing on some of the dreck I’ve had to put up with.

Yeah, NASA’s such a waste of money, we’d be better off without them.

And the innovations we now enjoy thanks to them…

    And satellites…

And the jobs and industries they create and support…
