Microsoft Excel World Champion Is A 15-Year-Old English Girl

Honestly, I don’t know what’s more surprising about this story: that a 15-year-old girl beat out 228,000 other Excel fans, or that Microsoft holds an Excel World Championship at all.

The final leg of the competition was held in San Diego, California, where the 15-year-old Rebecca Rickwood of Cambridgeshire, England, racked up a perfect score of 100 per cent following timed tests using Excel 2007. Having been awarded with $US5000 in prize money, she can now afford to upgrade to Office 2010 41 times. [BBC via TechRadar]

As someone who shouted his excitement to the world when he heard that Excel was finally expanding to over 1 million rows, how did I not get invited to enter this?

Likely because more people would enter and have had long enough to be fully up to date on how to use excel 2007 compared to 2010.

Did Jon Peltier know about this competition? Silly question.. there wouldn’t have -been- a competition, if he did.
