Jaw-Dropping Slow-Motion Footage Of The World’s Scariest Wave

Last weekend Teahupoo was hit with a mammoth swell, and it just happened to occur when the world’s top 32 competitive surfers were there for a contest. This other footage is from August 27, when it was arguably bigger than anyone has ever surfed it.

The contest was put on hold and a crew of madmen used jet-skis to whip each other into some unfathomably massive barrels. There was a ton of carnage, but thankfully no, deaths. Unbelievable. [Billabong]

I for one think the worlds scariest wave may have been the Tsunami in Japan… Closely followed by the previous one in Indonesia…

At 3:23, see a photographer lose his naked 5D Mark II, Battery Grip, 70-200mm f/4 IS USM, and 2x Extender to salt water… :(

lol gizmodo readers being called nerds…. I LOVE IT!

That’s just like walking into mcdonalds, and asking people if they’re hungry.

Then again, i guess gizmodo has digressed from the technology site it used to be, so i guess there is reason in you being here, watching useless videos of surfing.

Was pretty amazing. You’ve got to give it to those blokes with giant balls who surf that stuff!

    lose the 5D?
nah, minor splash at worst. Those things are weather sealed anyway, so worst case, back to the beach for a rinse.

That was some niiiiiice footage. Scary amounts of water rushing past, and some serious wipeouts.
