Typography is one of the easiest super important parts of civilisation to take for granted. It seems like it just sprouted where it is, weed-like. But an enormous amount of effort goes into every letter — here’s a visual tour.
PBS’ little sprint through contemporary typography highlights several important bigwigs — perhaps most notably Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, whose work you’ve very likely looked at without knowing it. These people exist to make signs and sentences both beautiful and effective, and they’re damn good at it. [via Laughing Squid]

Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 12:06 AMWhen I look at that massive list of fonts in MS word, Photoshop etc.. I am daunted. If it was easier to see what I could use for my project i’d pay for it.

Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 10:56 AMThat’s your fault for using rubbish applications. Try Xara Designer Pro, it gives you an interactive preview of every font and can do 99% of what most people would use either Photoshop or Word for, plus a billion or so more things. Seriously, I’ve recently been dragged kicking and screaming back to Photoshop and I can’t believe how little it has improved since I last used it (at Version 5.5 in 2000). Adobe should be thoroughly ashamed of their complacency.
