Oregon Health and Science University’s pinpointed the cutoff of orexin while ill as the root of that Ughhhhhhhh feeling:
Research has shown that in response to illness, animals divert all their energy to fight infection. Lethargy, fever and loss of appetite are symptoms of the body’s highly organised strategy to sacrifice biological and physiological priorities to provide the greatest chance of survival.
So what’s this mean? Pill poppin’! Orexin tablets already exist for treating sleep disorders, so now doctors think they’ll be able to simply prescribe them differently. The biggest gains will be seen with chronic illness patients, but shit — I want a mouthful of orexin right now. [OHSU via DVICE]

Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 11:53 AMI have this right now. But then again, I have Haemochromatosis so I have a REAL cause for feeling like crap all the time. Unfortunately no little pill can fix that.
Anyone that feels fatigued and achy I always suggest they get tested for the C282Y genetic mutation that causes Haemochromatosis…. by the way. ;)

Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 12:39 PMIt’s coming boys a girls,.. the day is coming when we all take a pill in the morning to wake us up and make us more amenable to work and a pill at night that will allow us to shut down and actually sleep… It’s a scary thought too, but there will be those of us that will take it gladly, in order to get through their dreary day. Looks like “George Lucas” got it right in “TX 1138″ after all… #[

Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 3:50 PMThe only objection I’d have to this scenario is if these pills have side effects or tolerance issues. Otherwise, bring it on!
