Leica cameras are beautiful. They’re top quality. They cost a fortune. And if you ever pondered the how and why behind any of those three immutable truths, you need to watch this spellbinding look at how a Leica lens is made. [Hypebeast]

Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 6:03 PMI might be committing sacrilege in the eyes of some, and don’t get me wrong, I appreciate quality and craftsmanship, by my god the bodies just look like so much cheap junk. I’d swear I had one of them as a kid and it was plastic and made in Japan….that’s before Taiwan etc. took over the “cheap” end of town so I’m showing my age a bit there. At least when you buy a Rolex or other high end such product, it oozes what you’re paying for…class. Surely that’s part of the appeal. I’m must be missing the point, I’m sure so don’t flame me. I’m just saying if I had the money, I’d want it to show at least a little.

Good quality product is released > Dodgy manufacturers rip off the distinctive look with crummy copies > People will now associate the more prevalent cheapo versions with the look > The original product now looks ‘cheap’

Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 11:09 AMIts not sacrilegious to express an opinion but the only comment i’ll make to you Jokemeister is that you spend the money you do on a Leica because thats how much it costs to get a fine piece of equipment.
You don’t buy it for prestige.
Arguably its a tool, not a status symbol. If you want status buy a gold plated camera and be done with it. My 2c.
