Stephen Fry’s QI Quiz Show Live In Australia: $200 Per Ticket!?

Gizmodo AU

Welcome to QI, the show that rhymes with bleed your pocket dry. But if you’re a total trivia geek (guilty as charged), and rich (not so much) then you’ll be pleased to hear that Fry, Alan Davies, and special local guests are headed to Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane. No word on Sydney or if ABC will pick up broadcast rights. [Ticketek]

I would *love* to go to one of these shows, but yeeeow that ain’t cheap! $99 just for the cheap seats is a dealbreaker when I throw in travel and accom.

It looks like the Brisbane show is booked via the QPAC website. $150 for seats in the peanut gallery and $199 for the ones up front (many already sold).

I’m really keen to go, but that’s a bit steep.

Brisbane’s tickets can be bought through their performing arts centre. With only 2 classes of ticket available, the cheapest being $150 I agree that the price will prohibit many lovers of the show.

I’m a big fan of the show, but c’mon! TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS ! What is going on I can watch it on Telly . Seriously! is it just me or are all tickets prices gone insane. Movie ticket prices, Footy tickets, Concert Tickets… etc. I remember as a kid you could go to a concert and it wouldn’t break the bank , now days you need to mortgage the home!

And just to make you feel even better about the cost, to go to a filming of an actual QI show in the UK (which I have done) is completely free!

How do we go about making sure “possibly Brisbane” turns to just “Brisbane”?

Yeah, at first I was excited then I clicked and checked the price.

It’s not like its really exclusive with 5 shows in each city. I reckon I might wait for some sorta discount offer that will hopefully come.

Why are they charging Sydney prices when they’re not going to Sydney?! ;-)

Yeah… no. I have never found QI to be that enjoyable and even if i was a fan $200 is a bit steep.

I didnt even pay that much for the AC/DC concert i went to last year.

$200!? How the feck are Alan Davis and Stephen Fry traveling to Australia? On a platinum rocket plane that burns diamonds for fuel and is piloted by the reanimated corpses of Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindberg?

And as for the “special local guests”… I guess that means the panel will be made up of perennially mirthless clowns such as Fiona O’Loughlin, Charlie Pickering, Lehmo, Emma Thom, or horror of horrors, Sam Simmons.

I admit, it’s a steep price.. but I am a huge QI fan and have been ever since the series ‘A’ so regardless of price I must see!

That QI would come to the little backwater city of Perth is too irresistible for someone like me (and 6 friends it seems ;)

I have noticed that we are getting a massive variety of performers from around the globe at the moment. They are top performers and as a consequence are charging premium prices. I am not surprised as we are perceived as being a wealthy country at the moment… No matter what our internal perception is. These shows are also being sold as ‘one only chances’ which is pretty much right. I am not saying that it is necessarily right but given an opportunity I would proably pay to see something like this.
P.S. Went to Metallica in Melbourne (my mate is in a wheel-chair and I went as his carer… Nominally that means I go free but I paid 1/2 for a $150.00 ticket. We did some maths and these shows were probably worth 2mill plus). I would be charging premium prices and coming here is I could.

Agree it is pretty steep but I’m a big fan and will be going. To the dopes comparing it to the tv show where tickets are free, obviously they recoup their money there from the TV advertisers or if its on the public broadcaster it’s  from our taxes. How do you think they would recoup their money for travel, venue costs, staff etc etc without charging for the tickets?

basically only the back seats left, not worth the money

To be fair it’s $199 for the up front seats at Her Majesty’s theater. The less pompous seats can be had from $99 to $159. What’s a deal breaker for me is having to book through Ticketek. I avoid anything that requires me to book through them or Ticketmaster. Those 2 companies are scum and deserve to die.

What about the $4.95 to email a PDF, then $4.95 to process payment? Or $7.20 to pickup at the box office? The additional fees add 5 or 6% to the cost of the ticket.

    I would pay top dollar to be in the front row of his show in Adelaide.. But it looks as if Adelaide and her Stephen Fry/Trivial fans have been left in the dark concerning the events that are to unfold.. Bloody Typical. And to even THINK of the money that you’d spend if you were to travel interstate to attend.. you’re looking at spending a small fortune on tickets+travel+accom, all for ONE show. Looks like I’ll have to wait till I finish highschool to attend one of his shows during my gap year. D;

I am a 75 y.o pensioner, love Stephen Fry to bits, are there concession prices for Melbourne’s forthcoming QI in October 2011???
How can I find out about ticketing?

I love QI – I’ve bought my tickets already & yes if you are lucky you can get free tickets in London – but how much would it cost you to fly over there! Much cheaper to buy em in Perth, etc. Common people it’s a one off opportunity to watch clever & witty people…and yes so the talent joining them will be locals – blah’s but I’d be happy just to watch Stephen & Alan on their own they are a dream team!

well I bet you’re glad you aren’t living here in little old Tasmania. Very rare that we get international visitors! Having said that, I paid $200 per ticket for my husband and I to see The Who – TWICE, for which I also had to pay for accommodation and flights. Some things are worth paying for…. As for QI, love the show – but not that much.
