Sony Was Still Making MiniDisc Walkmans When They Killed Them

Can you believe that Sony was still selling MiniDiscs, with the Nikkei reporting 22 million players were sold up to March 2011? If you want one brand new, you better get in quick though – as of September, it’s deeeead.

This comes years after everyone picked up an iPod or other MP3 player and forgot all about Sony’s optical format, first launched in 1992. Sad news for what was a great format back in the day – I remember being bowled over when my friend brought his Sony player to school, but as you should all remember, it was crippled by limited album releases and in typical style, exorbitant prices. I remember my lil MiniDisc walkman. Compared to recording a mixtape, it kicked all sorts of arse. At the time I was praying that Sony would open up the standard so it could replace (then common) floppy disks for removable storage.
*sigh* Sony, when ya gonna learn…
