Here’s a new one for Optus customers: an online ‘cloud’ service that lets you schedule, record and stream the 15 main free-to-air channels. The good: If you’ve got an Optus mobile, you get 45 minutes free storage, and data charges are zero rated. The bad: You can’t stream live TV (unless you fork out extra for Optus Mobile TV).
It’s definitely a bold move from Optus, and strikes me as a sort of mainstream Slingbox meets Fetch TV. Could be useful while on the train – but I’d like to see an option to download the video so tunnels don’t create unwanted cliffhangers.
Optus TV Now is only available to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth customers. It also looks like iPhone users get an app, while other Android phones and PCs see a web-based interface. [Optus]

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 12:29 PMAny word on the resolution of the playback stream for mobiles? I’d hate to be streaming even a Standard Definition video via the Optus 3G network…

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 12:31 PMWill give it a try, might be good to catch those shows you forget about.
I like the way the iPhone app makes you turn the wifi off to open it lol bit annoying..

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 12:56 PMI noticed on the sign up page you have to give an address and postcode.
If you put an Eastern States address, could you get items before they are shown in other places like WA?
Matt
Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 1:36 PM45 Mins? That’s pretty useless, I can’t think of a single show that I’d use that for. Pretty much everything I watch is at least an hour long.
For me to upgrade to a paying plan I’d have to see some worth in it, and I won’t find any worth if I can’t test it properly on shows I’d actually watch.

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 2:00 PMI’d like to watch tattslotto before before it is shown in WA.

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 4:34 PMwell signed up. downloaded the app. now am being told when starting up the up “We are currently experiencing difficulties, please close the app and reopen”
I guess it’s another half cocked idea from optus to go with their website and “Application Store”

Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 5:16 PMOr phone manufacturers could bother to put TV tuners in the phone, they’ve done it for japan.
The world is over streamed, and this cloud crap isn’t helping.

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 12:20 AMI have just updated my Optus app and I have to say it was about time they made an update. There was no need for me to have the app as I was not going to watch SBS or ABC. Glad there are now free to air channels, one down side is that I don’t think you can watch live. You have to record then play back your recording!

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 9:48 PMTodd, if u r using iPhone, u can chase play, that is near live streaming (2 minutes delay). I have tried it, it is cool!

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 9:56 PMSet it all up, message on screen says program was recording then after show was finished I got a message to say that the recording had failed please try again.
Do not waste money paying for this CRAP and certainly don’t rely on it to record a show you do not want to miss.
Jack
Friday, July 22, 2011 at 6:18 PMYou can record the show and playback while its recording which means its almost live TV.
This is great as I can watch the footy while I am out and will be great when cricket starts.

With Optus, I can now record and watch live AFL/NRL matches, Masterchef, Friends, Movies and other TV series while recording.
